Port Adelaide surprised many with its first pick but national recruiting manager Geoff Parker says he simply stuck to his plans.

Draft summary
"With those early picks you never know what's going to available by the time your pick comes around.  We went in with the strategy of bolstering our midfield. We think we got some good young developing players.

"We do work on best available but we didn't want to pick too many tall ruckmen. A lot of people had us pegged to pick Lycett. He's a good player but we thought that we'd already stocked up on ruckmen in the last couple of drafts.

"There's a lot of talk on who's going to go where and Ben Jacobs' name wasn't mentioned. We were quietly confident he'd be there at pick 16 but we weren't sure."

Selection No. 16: Ben Jacobs (Sandringham U18)
Player profile
"We were quietly confident he would still be there by our first pick. You are never quite sure. His endurance and left foot kick are his strengths. He has been able to play for Sandringham in the midfield and down back. He reads the play well and is a nice bodied type already. I know he'd be keen to play round one."

Selection No.35: Ben Newton (South Fremantle)
Player profile
"He's been through the AIS program and he suffered an injury just after national championships. He has got good kicking efficiency too. We identified him early in the year for South Fremantle and were impressed with what we'd seen in the first half of the year."

Selection No.36: Aaron Young (Eastern U18)
Player profile
"He is a very versatile player. He played a bit of forward and up back. He is a bit taller, so we were looking for that midfield type who can play in a few different spots. He was a bit different to the other two we had already picked."

Selection No.52: Cameron O'Shea (Eastern U18)

Player profile
"He is another tall, strong-bodied player who can play a lot of positions. He's got good endurance and the interchange rule we think might suit that sort of player. We were happy to get him there. We've got a few Eastern Ranges boys on the list now. It helps work against the go-home factor. It's not the be all and end all but it doesn't hurt."
