Charlie Dixon celebrates another goal for Port Adelaide with typical intensity.

PORT ADELAIDE expects power forward Charlie Dixon to remain with the club for some time to come, despite being out of contract at the end of the season.

Fully fit after a nasty leg injury in 2018 interrupted his 2019 campaign, Dixon has set the AFL on fire in 2020 with his strong marking, goals and presence in the Port forward line.

The big man leads the Coleman Medal race with 15 goals in his six games so far this season and again on the weekend showed his value with ten score involvements and three goals four to go with a 2020 league first seven marks inside 50.

But while his five year deal with Port expires at the end of 2020, Port Adelaide General Manager – Football, Chris Davies said there was no urgency to get a new contract locked away.

“No more urgency than there is with a number of others,” Davies said in a press conference on Monday.

“Charlie has made Adelaide his home, he wants to play for our football club, we want him to be at our footy club.

“He’s playing great footy, probably the best of his career he’s looking so dominant.

“Right now, I’m sure that Charlie will be at Port Adelaide for some time to come.”

The contract situation for many players has become more difficult to navigate at the moment given an AFL-wide freeze on player contract negotiations and discussion around changing list sizes and declining cap spend for clubs.

But Davies said when the AFL clears the path for negotiations to resume, the club will be well placed to lock away its talent, including Dixon.

“We’ve maintained contact with managers but haven’t been entering into any conversations. There’s still a bit of water to go under the bridge I imagine a discussion around list numbers and the player payment pool for next year which will happen externally to us.

“But at the same time, we’ll be ready to go if the AFL give us the all clear to be able to negotiate contracts.”

Since crossing from Gold Coast during the 2015 trade period, Dixon has become a target man, kicking 133 goals in 76 games for the club, making it 227 goals in 141 career games.
