Port Adelaide (SANFL) Senior Coach Tony Bamford is feeling positive ahead of the Magpies' first trial game for 2012, and is calling on all Port Adelaide fans to get behind the club's SANFL side in 2012.

"All I say to our fans who might be thinking about coming out this year is 'Don't think - do!" Bamford said.

The Magpies League and Reserves sides will host West Adelaide at Alberton Oval this Saturday and Bamford, now in his third year at the helm of the black and white, is looking forward to their first hit out against an opponent.

"First and foremost we're after no injuries,” he said.

"There's nothing worse than seeing players injured in trial games - understanding that it's part of the game and it will happen from time to time - but our number one priority is to get through the game unscathed."

The club has recruited a number of players over summer with former Power, Norwood and South Adelaide player Adam Cockshell moving to Alberton along with Callum Wilson (West Coast Eagles) and Ryan McKenzie (North Ballarat).

"We want to see what guys want to put their hand for round one. In terms of ready-made league footballers we've got (Adam) Cockshell from South Adelaide, (Callum) Wilson and Ryan McKenzie - they're the three guys who will have the greatest impact early at league level," said Bamford.

"Alongside those names there are several other players who have come in from interstate and local competitions who could quite possibly stake their claim for a League game as well."

Port Adelaide will look to build strongly on their 2011 season, which saw a number of narrow losses to the League's top sides. Bamford has identified improvements in ball usage as being key to the Magpies' finals quest this year.

"I can't imagine that our game style will be too much different this year - we just want to try implement it better. Skill efficiency was a clear problem with us in 2011 and we want to be able to use the ball more efficiently for sure," he said.

"If we want to make the finals this year we have to win those close games - we won't make the finals if we can't do that!"

Pre-season is always long but the work the players have put in over the last five months has been terrific really. Our coaching group couldn't have asked for more and we're just keen like they are to see them in action!"

All admission to Alberton Oval for Saturday's match is free with Reserves action kicking off at 11.15am ahead of the League game at 2.15pm.
