A Brad Ebert goal with seconds to go has helped a young Port Adelaide snatch a one-point comeback victory over the Western Bulldogs in the Elastoplast AFL European Challenge match on London’s Kia Oval.

After trailing by as much as 39 points in the third term, the largely inexperienced Power side kicked nine unanswered goals before the Bulldogs rallied to reclaim a 10-point margin late in the final quarter.

Despite having four fewer interchange players to rotate through the game, the Power remained composed, nailing the final two majors of the game including the match-winner from Ebert with under a minute on the clock.

Playing under coach Ken Hinkley for the first time, Port Adelaide won 14.4 (88) to the Bulldogs 13.9 (87) in the first AFL game played in London since 2006.

Playing his first game for the Power since shifting from Essendon during the trade period, Angus Monfries was outstanding kicking three goals, while small forward Cameron Hitchcock booted a double.

The Power kicked its first of goal mid-way through the opening term, with Monfries involved early and finding Jasper Pittard who kicked truly from outside of 50m.

Fellow recruit Jack Hombsch impressed with some early touches, but the Bulldogs scored goals through Ayce Cordy, Alex Greenwood, Luke Dahlhaus and Patrick Veszpremi to close the opening term 15 points in front.

The Power opened the second quarter strongly, with Jackson Trengove maintaining an influence. The regular backman found himself forward and marked in the goal square before converting.

Port Adelaide made it back-to-back goals, with young ruckman Jarrad Redden converting, to bring the score within six points.

The Bulldogs hit back, with acting captain Shaun Higgins leading the charge and kicking consecutive majors to re-establish a more significant lead.

Liam Picken extended the margin to 25 points at half time, goaling from a spectacular mark.

The Bulldogs opened the second half strongly through Veszpremi kicking his second and new recruit Koby Stevens.

But Port Adelaide seized the momentum in a run that would produce six consecutive goals including four in five minutes, two of which were scored by Hitchcock.

Acting captain Hamish Hartlett kicked a long bomb major in the run of goals that brought the margin to four points at the final change, having trailed by as much as 39. 

Port Adelaide snatched the lead for the first time early in the last term, as what started as an afternoon game in sunshine became a clash under lights.

Monfries kicked another goaled as the Power’s run of unanswered majors stretched to nine and the margin in their favour to 14 points.

The Bulldogs then broke the Power surge and reclaimed the run of play, with four consecutive goals of their own taking their advantage to 10.

The counter-attack saw Higgins, Veszpremi and Picken add to their goal tallies, while Tom Liberatore kicked his first.

But Port answered the challenge, with consecutive late goals - including the clincher to Ebert from a mark and set shot near the boundary.

His cool kick put the Power in front with seconds to go, allowing the Port Adelaide to hold on to a memorable win.

Key scoring contributions came throughout the game from a number of Port Adelaide's young players, with Hombsch, Ben Newton, Matthew Lobbe and Andrew Moore also kicking vital goals.
