PORT Adelaide defender Jackson Trengove says he'll wait until later this season to negotiate a new contract after meeting with his management in Melbourne during the club's bye weekend a fortnight ago.

Trengove is out of contract at the end of the year and is believed to have attracted the interest of a number of Victorian clubs including Richmond, which is in dire need of a key-position defender.

The 20-year-old was touted as a potential top-10 draft pick before suffering nerve damage to his leg in an operation to repair a torn hamstring, but the Power were the first team to show faith in his ability to recover, snaring him at No.22 in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft.

He spent most of his first year at Alberton rehabilitating the career-threatening injury, but cemented a place in the team last season, playing 19 games and earning a NAB Rising Star nomination for his performance against West Coast in round 20.

Prior to this season, he was recognised for his leadership potential, elected as the youngest-ever member of the club's leadership group.

The Power, who are also yet to re-sign full-back Alipate Carlile, are keen to secure Trengove's signature, but the sought-after Victorian said he was in no hurry to make a decision on his future.

"At this stage, it [my contract] is not going to get decided until the end of the year," Trengove said on Tuesday.

"At the moment, I'm really just trying to concentrate on my footy, on trying to cement my spot at centre half-back and on trying to improve as a young team.

"I'll sit down again my with manager towards the end of the year and also my family and we'll work out that situation with the club, but at this stage I'm not actually thinking about my contract."

Trengove is a member of the core group of young players the club believes will deliver its next premiership.

The Power have recorded only two wins from 12 games this season, but Trengove said he was confident coach Matthew Primus' decision to introduce more youth into the team in 2011 would pay off in the near future.

"Every player wants to be part of a premiership and I think this club here has the potential," he said.

"Young sides are going to have their ups and downs ... but we're working really hard at getting that consistency right and are starting to get games together.

"Jasper Pittard has had a great season and everyone knows about [the potential of] Travis Boak and Robbie Gray, [and] Hamish Hartlett is going to be a super midfielder.

"We've got a strong backline with Alipate Carlile and Troy Chaplin, and then Justin Westhoff up forward.

"The talent is there and that should really excite the fans and the players playing at the club."

Port Adelaide will be aiming to secure its third win of the season in the twilight clash with North Melbourne at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The Power laid a season-low 38 tackles to lose by 60 points when the two teams met at Etihad Stadium in round six, but have improved the defensive side of their game markedly in the last month.

One of the obstacles standing in Port Adelaide's way this week will be in-form Kangaroos forward Drew Petrie.

Petrie has kicked 24 goals in 11 games this season, including three in the Roos' win over Essendon last weekend.

Trengove might be overlooked for the job on Petrie in favour of bigger-bodied teammates Carlile and Chaplin, but said he would relish the opportunity to play on the star Roo if the opportunity arose.

"He [Petrie] crashes packs and is one of those forwards who I love watching play," Trengove said.

"You want to play on the best forwards going around and he is the best at the moment in my eyes."
