In the wake of Chad Cornes’ retirement and the horrific loss to Collingwood in Round 20, the Port Adelaide Football Club made a swathe of changes to the selected side to take on the Hawks at the MCG.

The most notable inclusions included two players selected to make their debut, with John Butcher and Tom Jonas listed as certain starters on Thursday night’s team sheets. They spoke to portadelaidefc.com.au ahead of boarding the flight to Melbourne to take on Hawthorn.

Alongside the retiring Cornes, the Power lost important players Hartlett and Pittard to injury but also omitted a further five players, and bringing in the two new boys as well as the experience of defenders Carlile and Chaplin, Surjan, Thomas, Rodan and Schulz, who was selected to play his 100th game in the AFL.

Broadbent, Surjan and Cornes all began the game on the bench, with returning midfielder Thomas the sub for the game.

Rioli got the Hawks off to a strong start, booting two goals within the first three minutes. A strong mark from Butcher saw him line up for his first shot on goal, but he pushed it wide, before Franklin kicked the Hawks third straight goal inside the first 9 minutes of the match.

The Hawks forward press was impressive, keeping the ball locked inside their forward half of the ground - when Port did get the ball they were under pressure, missing targets and turning the ball over. Hard work from Puopolo created a goal for Smith, before more pressure from Rioli earned a free in front of goal, and he made no mistake.

Another centre clearance from the Hawks saw a quick kick come into their forward 50, with Bailey hauling down a strong mark and then kicking truly.

A nice bit of bullocking work from Jonas - playing on Hawk skipper Hodge, no less - saw Butcher take another strong grab on the 50. His kick hit Schulz 30m out on a slight angle, but he pushed his set shot wide.

Another free kick in front of goal saw Hodge line up and nail the Hawks’ seventh straight goal, before another set shot was pushed wide, before Franklin had another set shot that missed everything in an horrific first term for the Power.

QUARTER TIME: 0.2.2 to 8.1.49. Possessions: Jacobs 8, Boak 7, Chaplin and Pearce 5.

The second term began in much the same way that the first ended - with the Hawks winning the centre contest, moving the ball forward, and Sewell kicking the easiest of goals as he dodged around opponents.

Another nice lead by Butcher saw him demand the ball - his handball to Gray saw Banner win the ball inside 50, and his set shot was true for the Power’s first goal of the game.

Poor decision making saw the ball turned over once more, with Franklin marking strongly and kicking it from just on 50 in his favourite pocket. A brilliant piece of play saw him soon kick another, before a long shot at goal from Guerra hit the post.

A perfect kick from Hale after the Hawks shared the ball around with no pressure placed upon them saw another goal kicked. A free kick inside 50 saw the ball squared up to Mitchell, who was pushed in the back by Cornes, marched to the square, and goaled.

After a couple of shots that didn’t hit the main target, Rioli booted his fifth when he was left alone on the half-forward flank - he charged inside 50 and kicked truly with ease under no pressure.

Hitchcock booted the second goal for Port for the day after marking, then earning a 50m penalty thanks to a free kick further down the field against former Power player Burgoyne, but it was answered almost immediately to make the margin an even 80 points once more.

It wasn’t too long before it jumped further ahead, with Mitchell kicking another goal in a display of sheer magnificence. A terrible decision by Jacobs to kick to Schulz out wide when Butcher was unmanned saw the ball come directly back into the Hawks forward line, with Franklin kicking another.

HALF TIME: 2.2.14 to 17.4.106. Goals: Banner, Hitchcock. Possessions: Boak and Gray 13, Jacobs 11, Cassisi and Pearce 10.

It took longer than the first two quarters, but the Hawks were once more the first goal kickers of the third time.

Another strong pack grab from Butcher saw him line up directly in front, and his kick was true for the first goal in the game for the former top 10 draft pick from 2009. He executed some fantastic defensive pressure, but the Hawks were simply too good - Franklin soon had another goal to make it a 98 point margin midway through the third term.

Suckling accepted a handball under no pressure from Lewis to kick a goal to make it over 100 points just on the 17 minute mark of the third term on another dark day for the Port Adelaide Football Club.

Schulz took a strong mark in the square from a hit-it-and-hope kick from Pearce, and he kicked truly to get it back under the triple figure margin, but Franklin stretched it back over that mark.

Butcher was once again involved in a scoring piece of play for the Power, earning a free - advantage was paid and Rodan ran into an easy goal.

A couple of points made it an even 100 points, before Shiels stretched it further after being a gifted a goal by an unselfish Franklin who, in the shadows of three-quarter time, kicked his seventh straight goal for the game.

THREE-QUARTER TIME: 5.2.32 to 23.6.144. Goals: Banner, Hitchcock, Butcher, Schulz, Rodan. Possessions: Cassisi 20, Gray 18, Pearce 17, Jacobs 16.

Hawk sub Breust marked strongly at the top of the square towards the start of the final term, after coming on for Sewell, and he continued the misery for the Power, bringing up the 150 for the Hawks.

A brilliant snap from Whitecross saw the Hawks have 13 goalkickers early in the term, then Breust - a clear crowd favourite - kicked another, then Rioli showed his genius to nail another from the boundary.

Lewis kicked his first, and Hawthorn’s twenty-eighth and 14th from any individual, to get Hawthorn closer and closer to their record of most individual goalkickers in a game, which prior to this game was sitting at 16. Mitchell’s brilliance with the ball gifted it to Franklin, who kicked his eighth straight for the game.

Several misses from the Hawks failed to really stretch their scoreboard close to the 200 point mark, but Lewis took it above beyond the 190 mark late in the term as the Power seemed unable to stop the onslaught, with another stretching the margin above the 160 point mark..
