PORT Adelaide members and supporters get their chance to help End Hunger from this weekend, with the club and its joint major partner Foodbank launching the Can of Opportunity fundraising crusade.

Come to Saturday night’s clash between the Power and Carlton at AAMI Stadium and help us to turn the empty cans of Opportunity into cans of cash to deliver food to those in need.

Volunteer collectors will be at the gates as you enter the ground for Saturday’s 7.10pm game, holding cans of Opportunity which we’d love you to help us fill with your loose change.

Every dollar counts because Foodbank - through its network of suppliers and donors - can deliver food to charities for around a quarter of the retail cost.

In addition to volunteer collectors taking donations at the ground, the club will give away hundreds of cans of Opportunity to spectators who are invited to fill them over the remainder of the 2012 AFL season and return them to any Power game.

The Can of Opportunity campaign will also continue at all IGA and Foodland supermarkets until the end of June, with customers invited to donate their spare change at the checkouts.

Port Adelaide chief executive officer Keith Thomas said the Can of Opportunity concept gave everyone the chance to help Foodbank, which will receive 100% of the proceeds.

“From the moment we launched our partnership we’ve been inundated by members, supporters and other people wanting to help us to help those who need assistance putting food on their tables,” Mr Thomas said.

“They get that chance through the Can of Opportunity. While it’s a Port Adelaide Football Club initiative, we think the campaign to end hunger in our community goes beyond football loyalties or even sporting interest and we are confident people will seize that opportunity.”

Foodbank chief executive officer Richard Pagliaro said every dollar donated by the public would go a long way in helping to combat hunger and tackle a challenge that is growing by the day.

“Through our many corporate supporters, donors and volunteers, we are able to supply food to charities for around a quarter of the retail cost,” Mr Pagliaro said.

“So if we can get everyone to donate just a couple of dollars we’ll make a huge difference to the increasing number of South Australians who don’t have access to the food that most of us are lucky enough to take for granted.

“The Can of Opportunity is really everyone’s opportunity to have an enormous impact.”

The cans of Opportunity have been supplied by SPC Ardmona and Visy, with the labels donated by the Bowden Group.

In addition to launching the Can of Opportunity, Port Adelaide and Foodbank will use Saturday night’s game to highlight the Power to End Hunger partnership and to unveil the team of corporate supporters who have teamed up to underpin the campaign.

The evening will also be used to unveil a television commercial highlighting the issue of hunger, the role of Foodbank and the partnership with Port Adelaide and those corporate backers.

Port Adelaide and Foodbank formed their joint major partnership at the start of the 2012 AFL season, with the Power carrying the “End Hunger” message on their guernsey.

Port Adelaide has also produced a limited number of "I HAVE THE POWER TO END HUNGER" t-shirts which are available through the Power Megastore for $30, with $5 going straight to Foodbank.
