Choco Uncut – Preliminary Final 2007
Mark Williams answers your questions exclusively in the build-up to the AFL Grand Final. Essential reading!
Marc
MARK WILLIAMS: Thanks Marc for your kind words. Halfway during the third quarter when the boys were celebrating goals, obviously we had kicked a lot of goals that quarter. Everyone was pleased because it was pretty obvious we were going to make the Grand Final. The idea that they were celebrating didn’t worry me at all, but I was just making sure everyone was keeping focused on the game. Criticism happened to us (for over celebrating) in 2004 after we won the preliminary final and when you look back on it it was a great release for the players. Players don’t get to celebrate too much and to win a preliminary final is a big deal.---My heart goes out to Michael Wilson. Can you pass on to him how much we admire him and that I’m sure all Port people are also hurting for him. Thanks Choco and go the POWER In 2007! From Marie xxxx

MARK WILLIAMS: You’re right Marie, the loss of Michael Wilson is a huge blow to our side. I talked to him after the game and obviously he was devastated along with his wife Leah and kids and family. He also knows that he’s won one premiership, he’s been lucky, a lot of people don’t. He certainly wished us all the best and is going to do everything he possibly can to get there and support us during the game.
---What a win, well done to everyone, but who is going to come in for WIllo? Lots of people seem to be backing Brad Symes but I think Lonie or Grey or Nathan Krakouer for a spark.
Terry Johenki
MARK WILLIAMS: Selection is always tough at this time of the year. Someone will get very lucky to get a berth and others will be unlucky. Given that we won by 15 goals, had Michael not been injured, they wouldn’t have got in and that’s just the way it is. I’ve said it before though, strange things happen in Grand Finals.---Mark it feels like the Victorians are ganging up on us because its been so long since one of their teams even played in the grand final let alone won one but I just know Melbourne’s going to be all teal this weekend, especially after the siren! CARN THE POWER!

MARK WILLIAMS: I’m not sure whether they’re all against us over there. Having played at Collingwood for a long time, and knowing the Collingwood people, they won’t be too happy to support Geelong, the team that just beat them so, I’m sure there’s probably something like a million Victorians who are really behind us and making sure we get up, so we look forward to their support!---Mark, I just wanted to pass on our thanks and admiration for what you have done this year. We must admit we can’t believe we’re going to Melbourne for the Grand Final after missing out in 2004. We’re coming over from WA and as good as it is from here, we’d love to be around Alberton right now. What’s the mood and feeling around the place leading into the game?
Watson family
MARK WILLIAMS: We’re really looking forward to the week, everyone is just embracing every opportunity that there is, whether it’s a Brownlow night or the motorcade. We’re really looking forward to the training sessions and getting on the plane together and getting over there and enjoying the week. Everyone’s excited, everyone knows it’s a huge task ahead of us. We’re huge underdogs and rightfully so. Geelong have been the best side for the year but it doesn’t always end up that way. We have got an inner confidence that we’re going to play really well. We’re going to try to play our best footy and if we do we’ll get the right result.
