PORT ADELAIDE coach Mark Williams was able to find solace in his side winning some aspects of the game, even though it didn't beat the Western Bulldogs on the scoreboard on Saturday night at TIO Stadium.

After declaring the Power's season over and making seven changes to the side that lost to Richmond – most of them forced, Williams said it was pleasing to see it contest many areas of the Darwin clash.

"I thought obviously we lost by nine goals but we won the hard ball gets and we won the tackles and I think the inside 50s were the same," he said.

"We dominated stoppages, we won goals from stoppages; unfortunately, we kicked 4.9 from there but there were a lot of positives from the game.

"I was pretty impressed by some of the new players who came in, who probably played in good bits but didn't really dominate.

"At half time, it was a real challenge for the players and I thought the second half of the game we really fought out well.

"I think we had more shots than they did and the last 20 seconds of the third quarter they kicked two goals and in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter, those three things really damaged us.

"It was disappointing to lose but the method of how we played and the competitiveness we showed was good for our club."

Williams said some of the players included for the match will get another chance after solid performances.

"I'm not exactly sure who will be back in a couple of weeks' time and who won't, so that's a little hard to guarantee spots," he said.

"For instance, if Peter Burgoyne's ready, I'm sure he's going to get a game.

"So we'll have to wait and see on that, but we also learned that we can be competitive."

Ultimately, Williams saw that poor decisions cost his side, after it failed to get on a run like the Dogs' eight-goal burst in the second quarter.

"I think they kicked seven goals against Sydney, who are a great shut-down side, in one quarter. You'd like to think that you're in it and you're competitive but if you're not switched on the whole time…," he mused.

"Earlier in the game, we were having a lot of the ball and a lot of opportunity but as I said, poor decisions with our kicks and certainly dropped marks inside 50 probably cost us a bit.

"So we might have had that 15 minutes ourselves, without getting results."
