Power triumph over Pies
Port Adelaide has won a tough battle over Collingwood
PORT Adelaide has won a tough battle at the MCG on Saturday afternoon, coming from behind to win by 18 points.
The final scores were Port Adelaide 12.12(84) to Collingwood 9.12(66).
With multiple second-half goals to Josh Mahoney, Michael Wilson, and three first-half majors to Brett Ebert, the Power had more answers in the wet.
Collingwood had more midfield possession early on, but when the Power started to win the midfield battle in the final quarter, they kicked away to win by 18 points. With the Magpies controlling the midfield for most of the day, Port Adelaide's backline was excellent in the wet conditions, consistently repelling the Magpies' attacks.
For the Power, Kane Cornes (32 possessions) and Chad Cornes (28 possessions) were both influential in the win, while the Burgoyne brothers were good, particularly in the first half.
With the margin just two points at half-time, the Pies raced out of the blocks in the second half with two quick goals to Dane Swan. But the Power shut down the scoring opportunities and slowly pegged the margin back to one point with goals to Josh Mahoney and Michael Wilson.
In the final quarter, Power midfielders Kane Cornes and Wilson kept plugging away, with the rewards coming through further goals to Mahoney and Wilson. When David Rodan goaled at the 20 minute mark, putting the Power 19 points ahead, the game was sealed.
