Port Adelaide’s Nathan Lonie says it’s time the Power turned the tables on its disappointing record against the Kangaroos.

Of all the teams in the competition the Kangaroos have the best record against Port Adelaide, with the Power toppling the Roos just three times in almost 10 years.

“It’s 13-3 in their favour and we lost to them twice last year, including the opening round here at home, which was disappointing," Lonie said.

"They are obviously a pretty good side, but we’re confident we can beat them.”

While the Power enjoyed its upset win over Fremantle last week the team isn’t getting carried away. Lonie says the round one victory has given the Power the added confidence it needs to beat its bogey side on Sunday.

“It’s been said that it was one of the great wins for the club," he said.

"No one tipped us and Fremantle are a great side, who I can’t see losing too many more games at home. Choco sort of told us to enjoy it while we could, but we know we really need to win this week because 2-0 would just be a great start to the season.”

The 24-year-old flourished in his first season with Port Adelaide, playing 17 games before a shoulder injury ended his season. Lonie continued his good form against Fremantle, gathering 20 possessions and sending the Power inside its forward 50m on four occasions.

“It was good to get out there and have a few kicks," Lonie said.

"I didn’t play round one last year, I got left out of the team and I really wanted to prove that I should be there. We’ve got a great side and I definitely want to be part of it."

Lonie played 64 games with Hawthorn before he was traded to the Power at the end of 2005. The agile defender has become an integral part of the Port Adelaide backline, using uses his penetrating kicking skills to set-up the Power attack.

Lonie credits the move to Alberton with rejuvenating his career, but with a player like Brad Symes waiting in the wings Lonie isn’t getting ahead of himself.“I think I needed to leave the Hawks. I had a terrible year in my last (year) at Hawthorn and Choco was good enough to give me a chance. Seventeen games last year was a good start but you have to prove yourself every week, and I’ll be trying to do the same this weekend.”

The Kangaroos were unlucky not to be heading into this week’s game with a win under their belt. The Roos had seven more scoring shots than Collingwood, but went down by three points in controversial circumstances. Lonie says the Power know better than to underestimate the potential of the Roos.

“I think they were four or five goals in front and Collingwood sort of ran over the top of them, but they still got to the stage where they were leading by that margin so they obviously played well," Lonie said.

"We will need to start well and continue on from our good form last week to win.”

With Adam Simpson, Brent Harvey and Shannon Grant all among the Kangaroos' best players, Port Adelaide is gearing up for a battle of the midfields. Peter Burgoyne is likely to make his return to the side, adding another gear to the turbo-charged Power midfield.

“They (Simpson, Harvey and Grant) are all great players, they have proven that for many years and we’ll definitely have to watch them and a couple of their younger guys. But at the same time I don’t think we can focus just on stopping those guys, we need to play attacking footy like we did against Freo, because that’s what got us over the line.”

Opportunist forward Josh Mahoney also looks fit to return, but with Daniel Motlop ruled out with an ankle injury the door could open for another debutant. Impressive tall forward Justin Westhoff looms as the front runner.

“I don’t know what Choco is thinking but Justin (Westhoff) kicked five goals last week which is terrific," Lonie said.

"He, Adam Cockshell and Ryan Willits are all competing for one spot and the better they play, the stronger the team will be because that competition for spots is so tight.”

That one spot won’t be vacant for much longer. Power captain Warren Tredrea will make his return to football on Thursday night in the Port Adelaide Magpies clash with traditional rivals Norwood. If all goes well Tredrea could earn a recall to the Power as early as next week.

“We would love him to be playing with us," Lonie said.

"I think there will be a massive crowd out there at Norwood on Thursday night and let’s hope he plays really well and gets back because he’s such a wonderful player."
