MATTHEW Primus will trial a fresh ruck combination against Carlton this weekend as he looks to build a duo capable of emulating the tall timber of Port Adelaide’s yesteryear.

Primus was the Power’s inaugural ruckman and combined with Brendon Lade to provide Port Adelaide’s previous coaches a range of tall options across the ground in the late nineties and early 2000s.

Both were All-Australian rucks and Lade later developed another formidable pairing with Dean Brogan.

Not since Brogan and Matthew Lobbe mid-way through 2011 has Primus utilised two rucks and he will pair his two current big men - Brent Renouf and Jarrad Redden - against Carlton tonight.

“We want to have a look at two rucks, we think they’ll (Carlton) probably play three - they did last week, they said they’re going to (this week),”said Primus.

“We want to have a look at what two ruckman does for us rather than just Brent or just Jarrad with a forward helping them out.”

Redden and Renouf have rotated principle ruck duties in 2012 with the former making his AFL debut in Round 1 against St Kilda and being rested after the Power’s third round game against the Swans - Renouf holding down the big man role ever since.

Redden has been named in Port Adelaide’s side to replace fellow tall option Daniel Stewart, who has pinch-hit in the ruck at various points throughout the first nine games.

Primus is using Saturday night’s game against the Blues to see what sort of impact Redden and Renouf can have for the Power.

“We’ll see what kind of impact it has on us at our stoppage stuff but then what it does with our forward line setup,” he said.

“We just want to have a look at two rucks and see if we’re able to sustain a bit more competiveness around the stoppages - don’t know whether it will work but we’re thinking it might help Renouf maintain the rage a bit longer and Jarrad’s form the first three weeks was pretty good.”

“I think they can both go forward ...the difference is can they go forward and be as good as Daniel Stewart’s been for us, or a Westy (Justin Westhoff).”

“They’re probably not as mobile as them but they can certainly take a mark.”
