Chad Wingard has been awarded the Gavin Wanganeen Medal for the best player under the age of 21 at the club's John Cahill Medal.
Chad Wingard has been awarded the Gavin Wanganeen Medal for the best player under the age of 21 in the Port Adelaide squad this year.
Wingard, 19-years-old, was drafted to the Power with pick 6 in last year's national draft.
Hailing from Murray Bridge, Wingard played nineteen games for the Power on debut, including his head-turning 27-disposal performance against the Brisbane Lions in Round 22 which drew a NAB AFL Rising Star nomination.
Fellow teammates and debutants Aaron Young and Jarrad Redden were also nominated for the award.
Of his being awarded the Wanganeen Medal presented to him by Power football development manager Daniel Healy, Wingard was quick to thank his teammates and family for their support of him during the course of his first season of elite football.
"Just my parents as well as my [extended] family as well as my host family - they are people that have really influenced my life," said Wingard.
John Cahill Medal master of ceremonies Chris Dittmar asked Wingard whether he would one day consider taking on the Port Adelaide captaincy.
Wingard however said his short and medium term focus at the Power was on developing into a quality AFL footballer.
"That’s a big question [captaincy]," he responded.
"I'm not looking for that at all Im just looking to do my role every week and put my name up for contention."
