PORT Adelaide has left the door open for former Fremantle midfielder Josh Carr to rejoin his first AFL club by passing on its final selection in the NAB AFL Draft.

The Power used seven of their eight picks to secure some of the country's finest young talent from Saturday's draft, but held off on using their last selection of 84 in order to consider Carr in the December 16 pre-season draft.

Carr, 28, advised Fremantle in late September he wanted to shift back to his original team, but negotiations between the two clubs broke down during trade week and a deal could not be reached.

Port Adelaide currently holds the second pick in the pre-season draft, with recruiting manager Blair Hartley confirming on Saturday it would "look at" re-recruiting Carr in just over two weeks' time.

Hartley was pleased with the crop of talent the Power managed to pick up during the draft, with the club pulling off somewhat of a recruiting coup by securing highly rated pair Hamish Hartlett and Jackson Trengove with its first two picks.

The Power also recruited young defender Matthew Broadbent, midfielder Mitchell Banner, ruckman Jarrad Redden, goalkicker Glenn Dawson and former Geelong midfielder Jason Davenport to Alberton as part of a mixed bag of talent.

"We were lucky because we had seven picks and we were able to address a variety of needs," Hartley told afl.com.au.

"We picked what we thought were the best two available players with our first two picks, with Hamish and Jackson.

"Then we were ecstatic to get Broadbent and Banner as well ... followed by a ruckman –Redden – because we came into the draft hoping we'd get a ruckman.

"Then we got an exciting medium forward in Dawson who can do some exciting things, and then a recycled product with Davenport in what we hope will be a David Rodan-sort of role. We're looking for some good things from him next year.

"I've said all along that if you go into the draft with a desire to pick a specific type of player, you will get yourself caught out.

"We were just looking for the best available player early on and I think we addressed our needs as well, so we're very happy."
