With three consecutive wins and a renewed desire visible in the efforts of its players, Port Adelaide’s season continues to improve following its 54 point win over Carlton on Saturday night.

End Game

Port Adelaide took a massive scalp in defeating Carlton and in doing so put its own early-season blues behind it. The 54 point thrashing in wet and wintry conditions was the first four quarter effort the team had put together since round one against St Kilda and highlighted the advances the playing group has made through the early part of the year. Now sitting at 4-6, the Power is placed to further improve on its ratio before the bye.

In his own words - Matthew Primus

“We probably haven’t attacked the opposition like that since round one and funnily enough we got the result we wanted.”

“We stuck to what we wanted to do and the plan we wanted to play with - we did that to a tee (the players did that).”

“We’ve turned our focus pretty quickly to Hawthorn, they’re a great team - one of the best teams going around at the moment - so we’ve got to set ourselves for the challenge of that.”

What it means

Port’s fourth win of the year puts it back within reach of the top eight (two wins out), but the focus for Port will be on maintaining its current run of form and simply putting in the performances on the park. Coach Matthew Primus will look for a playing group that is focussed on putting in the four quarter efforts that should become characteristic for the side from here on. The playing group appears settled and with players like Matt Thomas and Danyle Pearce appearing comfortable in their roles and as more of the Power’s middle tier players enter form, the side is poised to take more scalps through out the season.

The future

Undoubtedly the performances of Matthew Broadbent and Ben Jacobs highlight the acceleration of Port Adelaide’s development program. From being part of Matthew Primus’ plan to blood new players, these two certainly form part of the Power future. Coupled with another good performance from Chad Wingard, the team looks increasingly comfortable with one another and ahead of a critical home game against the Hawks before playing the Bulldogs in Melbourne ahead of the bye, these players hitting form now is crucial for Port’s prospects in the second half of 2012.

Injury list
Jay Schulz was subbed out of the game during the fourth quarter, but has been cleared of rib damage after a mid-term collision. He will be tested ahead of Port Adelaide’s game against Hawthorn on Sunday.

Travis Boak underwent surgery on Monday for a foot complaint and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

The Black and White

Port Adelaide’s Foxtel Cup campaign came to an abrupt end when the Magpies went down by 16 points to Queensland-based Morningside FC on Saturday afternoon. The Pies kicked ahead early in the final term before Morningside responded with the final six majors of the game. The Magpies now turn their focus to the SA-based Panthers, South Adelaide, at Alberton on Saturday afternoon - a critical game for Port Adelaide with the opportunity to put its third win on the board up for grabs.
