PORT Adelaide skipper Dom Cassisi has, once again, been feted by his teammates, honoured as the Fos Williams Medallist at Port Adelaide’s Best and Fairest evening.
The award is voted by the players, and is measured on leadership, selflessness, courage, professionalism, loyalty and sense of humour.
Cassisi’s courage and commitment to the team cannot be questioned, with the ultimate leader breaking a leg and damaging a knee early in the Round 2 match against West Coast at AAMI Stadium, and playing on despite his injuries before eventually having to be subbed out of the game.
Cassisi’s injuries required surgery, resulting in the skipper missing nine weeks of the year, before ironically resuming against West Coast at Paterson’s Stadium in his home town of Perth.
Throughout his trying lay-off, Dom further demonstrated his leadership through his almost constant presence at the club. In that time he not only managed his own recovery, but provided valuable advice and support to his team-mates.
His return brought important spirit back onto the field and was vital to maintaining belief and confidence among the playing group as they faced a challenging second half of the season.
Once again the consummate team man, Cassisi’s defensive pressure continues to be vital for the Power, with his tackling a statistical highlight, including tallies of 13 against Hawthorn in Round 21, 11 against the Bulldogs the following week as well as in his comeback game in Round 13, and 10 against the Crows in Balfours Showdown XXXI in Round 19 as well as the historic first AFL game at Adelaide Oval against the Demons in the final game for the year.
2011 marks the fourth year in a row that Cassisi has been voted the Fos Williams Medallist by his teammates, highlighting the leadership he provides to a young group of emerging players.
