Port Adelaide has until Tuesday morning to decide whether it will contest a charge against Shaun Burgoyne at the tribunal this week.

The Power superstar was charged on Monday evening with engaging in rough conduct against Lenny Hayes during the second quarter of Friday night’s win over St Kilda.

Burgoyne, one of the Brownlow Medal favourites, was handed a three-game ban but it will be reduced to two if the club decides to plead guilty and accept the charge on Tuesday morning.

The club said on Monday it would assess its options overnight. It has until 10.30am (CST) on Tuesday to advise the AFL of its decision.

The AFL released the following finding on Monday evening...

The incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), medium impact (two points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 243.75 points and a two-match sanction.

If the club and Shaun decide not to accept the two-game ban, there will be a tribunal hearing on Tuesday or Wednesday evening.

Port Adelaide faces Melbourne (MCG), Richmond (AAMI Stadium) and Sydney (SCG) in the next three weeks.
