SHAUN Burgoyne could face four weeks on the sidelines after being reported for rough contact against Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell from Saturday’s match in Tasmania.

The AFL’s Match Review Panel assessed the incident on Monday afternoon as follows…

Shaun Burgoyne, Port Adelaide, has been charged with a Level Three engaging in rough conduct offence against Sam Mitchell, Hawthorn, during the first quarter of the Round Eight match between Port Adelaide and Hawthorn, played at Aurora Stadium on Saturday May 17, 2008.

In summary, his existing carry over points from within the last 12 months means that his three-game sanction will remain as a three-game penalty, even with an early plea.

The incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), high impact (three points) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three offence, drawing 325 demerit points and a three-match sanction. He has 93.75 points carried over from within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 418.75 points and a four-match sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to 314.06 points and a three-match sanction.

The Power will have until Tuesday lunchtime to decide whether to contest the charge or take the reduced early guilty offer of three matches. If it contests the decision, the tribunal will sit on Tuesday night.

The Power plays Sydney (home), Fremantle (away), Carlton (home) and Geelong (away) in the next month.

Brother Peter was cleared by the match review panel, who decided Peter had turned his back to lessen the impact. Their official explanation…

Contact between Port Adelaide's Peter Burgoyne and Hawthorn's Ben McGlynn from the third quarter of Saturday's game was reviewed. Burgoyne was committed to the contest. He realised contact would be late, and turned his back to McGlynn to lessen the impact. No forceful high contact was made by the Port Adelaide player. No further action required.

Shaun was not the only player to be cited on Monday. Hawthorn’s Ben McGlynn and Shane Crawford also copped suspensions of four matches and two matches respectively (with offers of one-match reductions for early pleas). Their reports were assessed as follows…
