PORT Adelaide will be without captain Domenic Cassisi for the first time this pre-season when it takes on North Melbourne in Saturday's NAB Challenge game at Visy Park.

Cassisi and full-back Alipate Carlile have both been rested, while Travis Boak (soreness), Matt Thomas (foot), Hamish Hartlett (AC joint) Tom Logan and rookie Danny Meyer (wrist) will also sit out the game with minor ailments.

Coach Mark Williams said the omissions would provide an opportunity for some fringe players to push for selection come round one.

"It’s really important to play well this week," Williams said after training on Friday.

"There are quite a few young players playing and they know there’s only a week to set themselves up for the last practice game, where most teams will play their best side."

However, the Power will welcome back Peter and Shaun Burgoyne, Marlon Motlop, Paul Stewart, Matthew Westhoff and Michael Pettigrew this week.

Hamstring soreness forced veteran forward Warren Tredrea to withdraw from the side that lost its NAB Cup quarter-final to Geelong.

Tredrea will not play against North either but surprised Williams by getting through training on Friday.

He will be assessed during the week with the aim of playing against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium next Friday.
