PORT Adelaide caretaker coach Matthew Primus remains unsure whether he’ll be appointed the club’s full-time boss, but he’s still adamant he wants the job.

The Power’s 10-point victory over Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Sunday took their win-loss record to 5-2 since Primus took over from Mark Williams, giving the former Port ruckman and skipper the upper hand in the race for the position.

“We set ourselves a goal with seven weeks to go,” Primus said. “We wanted to win all our home games and we wanted to see if we could get a couple on the road.

“It’s a credit to the players, because it’s very easy with seven weeks to go to not get too much out of the season.

“They really dug deep and hung tough together and hopefully they’ve proven to each other that we’re a young group going forward.

“If they consistently get out there and train to get better we can be a pretty good team.”

Port Adelaide has committed to interviewing a number of candidates for the coach's role, so Primus has acknowledged he is no certainty to be at the helm next season.

“It’s been a great seven weeks. I’ve really enjoyed it,” Primus said. “I’ve learned a fair bit about it and the good thing is that the club has been able to see what I do Monday to Friday, which is an important part of it.

“But they’re looking into all the candidates… lots of different things that aren’t just about winning on the weekends.

“It’s been great to be involved and have some good wins. But it’s all about the process they’re doing and that’ll determine who gets it.”

Primus didn’t want to take sole responsibility for turning Port Adelaide’s campaign around after the club had lost nine games in a row during the middle part of the season.

“I think it’s an indication of the talent we have in our group,” Primus explained.

“We are a young group, and… missing the finals means we’ve got some work to do.

“It more shows what we have available at our club than who the coach was.”

Port Adelaide is expected to name its new coach within the next month.
