PORT Adelaide forward Jay Schulz has been given the medical all-clear from abdominal injuries, but the timing of his return to AFL action is yet to be confirmed.

The 27-year-old suffered internal damage during a marking contest in the Power’s Round 12 clash with the Western Bulldogs near six weeks ago. He has since missed games against Geelong, Adelaide, Essendon and Melbourne while the club also had a bye during his enforced absence.

Schulz played out the game against the Bulldogs at Etihad stadium before spending several nights in a Melbourne hospital where doctors determined the extent of his injuries. These included a ruptured lumbar artery that caused internal bleeding and left him with a large blood clot.

Specialists today cleared Schulz after scans confirmed the clot was breaking down and would not get any worse, however he could still be two-to-three weeks from selection.

It’s a major boost for the Power and for Schulz, who was facing the possibility of missing the remainder of the 2012 season.

Port Adelaide general manager football Peter Rohde said: “Jay’s got the specialist’s medical all clear, but he’s got to do some training and convince our club doctors and coaches that he’s fit and ready to play.

“Jay is recovering really well and it will great for him to play a few more games this season.

“But we’ve said all along that we won’t take any chances with this injury and we all need to be certain that he’s ready from both an injury and fitness point of view.”

Schulz missed two games earlier in the season after suffering a cut eye in the Round 5 Balfours Showdown, but he remains the Power’s leading goal-kicker for 2012 with an accurate 28.11 from his 10 appearances so far.

Schulz will train with the main group on Thursday.
