With AFL football over for the year and the SANFL entering the business end of the season, 11 Power players were in SANFL colours on the weekend in atrocious conditions.
The clear standout in difficult conditions across the weekend was Daniel Webb, but special mention must go to the ground staff who managed to get Alberton Oval into shape for the game between the Magpies and the Roosters, in which the Power’s first pick in the NAB AFL Draft for 2009,John Butcher, made his SANFL senior debut.
SANFL Player of the Week
Daniel Webb (Bloods reserves v Redlegs) - After a quiet first quarter where he was caught behind his opponent while forward, booting 2 goals and 3 behinds in the second quarter was a great effort, and he looked very sharp and lively by playing in front and getting to the ball first. He worked really hard to keep the ball inside the forward 50m arc, and continues to improve weekly. He finished with 15 possessions, 8 marks, 3 goals and 4 behinds.
PTV: SANFL Round 23 Highlights
Marlon Motlop (Roosters reserves v Magpies) - In atrocious conditions, Marlon performed well - he ran off the half-back flank and provided plenty of drive out of the backline. He got his fair share of the football, although it was hard for anyone to kick effectively with extremely strong winds hampering all players on the day.
Wade Thompson (Roosters reserves v Magpies) - Once more, Bullet played as a defender. He uses his pace to be evasive and to gain metres for his team - any player who can be a ’60 metre’ player (that is, run 20 and kick 40) is handy to have. He needs to keep working on getting more of his own ball and use his strong body in the contest.
Daniel Moltop (Roosters v Magpies) - A solid game by Daniel - he has really tried hard over the past several weeks to have an impact on the football field. He worked hard all day long to provide a forward option, and kicked an important goal in the last quarter to win the game for the Roosters in terrible weather.
John Butcher (Magpies v Roosters) - In his first game in the SANFL seniors after a number of weeks in the reserves since coming off the long term injury list, Butch confronted conditions that were not ideal for a big marking forward. He showed what he can do at this level on occasion, clunking a big mark in the first quarter. He also showed some versatility to play in the ruck, snaring a couple of hit-outs to go along with 2 shots at goal, both of which resulted in behinds.
Glenn Dawson (Eagles reserves v Double Blues) - Once again, Glenn played in a forward role, providing a deep-lying marking target for his midfielders. He lead up at the ball carrier, but wasn’t able to mark the ball in conditions that didn’t suit a marking target. He applied pressure and will need to keep improving and developing his football by working hard both within the contest and when he’s not directly involved in it.
Jarrad Redden (Eagles reserves v Double Blues) - Big Red played mainly as a forward with an occasional run in the ruck. When he was up forward he had three shots on goal, kicking 2 through the big sticks. He had a good contest against the Double Blues’ ruckman in Kurtze, but you can see that he’s enjoying his time while playing forward, and he has been developing well in that area throughout 2010.
Matt Westhoff (Bulldogs reserves v Redlegs) - Westy tied to work hard over four quarters in terrible conditions not suited to a big player. He need to have more impact and stamp his authority on the game early, but as the game wore on he did some nice things, playing between wing and forward.
Scott Harding (Bloods reserves v Redlegs) - A very inside game by Scotty, who worked hard around the stoppages, picking up 22 possessions, 6 clearances, and kicked a nice snap goal. Importantly, it was also a good game defensively, as he also laid 7 tackles.
Jase Davenport (Bloods v Redlegs) - Dav struggled to get his hands on the footy, but he worked hard despite being rarely used in general play as he played on the half-forward, moving onto the ball on occasion.
Matthew Lobbe (Bloods v Redlegs) - With 25 hit-outs, 10 possessions and 5 tackles this was a great return to league level by Lobbe after coming back in the reserves last week following an extended injury lay-off. He started slowly but had a really good second half, with strong ruckwork and hunting the ball around the clearances where he really had an impact, getting the ball to the advantage of his midfielders. He also pushed forward at times to create a target.
