Full flight SANFL footy resumed after the state game bye and a number of Power players impressed Port Adelaide’s football development team.

Development Manager Daniel Healy rated the performance of Tom Logan for the Tigers - the hard defender chalking up 27 possessions in a losing side - and Daniel Stewart who again impressed in the Roosters’ team.

Tyson Edwards reviewed the Norwood and Panthers match whilst Matthew Nicks enjoyed his afternoon at the matches between West Adelaide and the Eagles at Richmond.

SANFL Player of the Week

Tom Logan (for Tigers v Roosters) 27 disposals, 9 marks, 1 tackle, 2 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 4 rebound 50s, 1 goal

Very good stuff by Tommy against the Roosters and he’s our Player of the Week this week. He had about 27 possessions, rebounded great and was very tough and hard when he needed to be - even kicking a goal from outside 50. It was a really encouraging performance form Tommy.

League

Daniel Stewart (for Roosters v Tigers)
13 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles, 12 hit outs, 2 inside 50s, 2 goals

Dan played up forward and as was dominant in the first half particularly, took six marks, had 13 possession and kicked 2.1 for the game - generally a good all-round performance from him.

Aaron Young (Roosters v Tigers)
16 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles, 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 1 goal

Played wing/half forward/on ball and had a steady comeback game after getting injured against Fremantle. He had 16 possessions, kicked a goal and did his usual competitive, tough stuff and although he wasn’t as involved as we would like him to be, it was a reasonable return to League footy for him.

Nathan Blee (for Roosters v Tigers)
13 disposals, 6 marks, 2 rebound 50s

Played down back on a big, tall Glenelg forward and had a pretty good day of it, beating his opponent (only outmarked once or twice) and was generally very good. 13 possessions for him as well helping out with North’s rebound and he used the ball really well - so another solid performance from Bleezy.

David Rodan (for Redlegs v Panthers)
16 disposals, 2 marks, 5 tackles, 6 clearances, 3 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Had 16 possesssion, 5 tackles and 6 clearances but unfortunately it wasn’t a game where he produced his usual output. D-Rod continues to work on his spread from stoppages and he managed a few instances where he managed to demonstrate those things but we certainly want him to continue to work on that so he can pressure selectors to pick him in the AFL side.

Tom Jonas (for Redlegs v Panthers)
11 disposals, 1 mark, 2 tackles, 1 clearance, 4 rebound 50s

Tommy played in a defensive role all night and had a couple of goals kicked on him in the first half but in the second half he played really well. Was very good defensively in a reasonably solid game from him.

Simon Phillips (for Redlegs v Panthers)
11 disposals, 2 marks, 1 tackle, 3 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 goal

Flip had a reasonable game, not up to his potential or normal work rate but still had some influence on the scoreboard and that’s his role. He continues to work on his pressure and work rate as well.

Cam O’Shea (for Panthers v Redlegs)
8 disposals, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 1 inside 50, 1 rebound 50

Cam played wing and a little bit forward, only had 8 possessions but it wasn’t a great game from him, unfortunately. He did manage to position himself well a couple of times throughout the day but wasn’t used for them by his teammates - overall a quiet outing.

Matthew Lobbe (for Bloods v Eagles)
15 disposals, 4 marks, 5 tackles, 15 hit outs, 7 clearances, 1 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Matthew started in the ruck, went forward for small stints and had a rest of the bench. I thought in the second quarter he really stepped it up and took the game over for West Adelaide through the middle, a couple of clearances as well. He’s been fantastic over the last few weeks.

Daniel Webb (for Bloods v Eagles)
7 disposals, 3 marks, 4 tackles, 9 hit outs, 1 clearances, 1 inside 50, 1 goal

Webby played deep forward for most of the game, kicking a goal (putting another shot out on the full) and featured in the ruck a bit as well. Up forward he was able to outjump his opponent and with limited possessions and limited opportunities he still showed the competitiveness we were after.

Reserves

Danny Butcher (for Roosters v Tigers)
7 disposals, 1 mark, 1 tackle, 2 clearances, 2 inside 50s, 1 rebound 50

Unfortunately Danny has been hampered by hips and groins for most of the year, we’ve been trying to manage them unfortunately on the weekend he showed that he was clearly not right. He wasn’t able to run at any speed or pace, had a really quiet day and in the end we sat him out. He’ll have a couple of weeks out on the sidelines and try to get some rest, get himself right and hopefully had another tilt at it by year’s end.

Mitch Curnow (for Double Blues v Bulldogs)
9 disposals, 2 marks, 6 hit outs, 5 clearances

Wasn’t one of Mitch’s best games, he played in the ruck all day and had 9 possessions and a couple of marks. He got a heavy knock in the last quarter and didn’t get to come back on. Mitch is continually working on his aggression and competitiveness at centre bounces and in general play.

Ben Newton (for Bloods v Eagles)
11 disposals, 2 marks, 4 tackles, 1 hit out, 1 clearance, 2 inside 50s

Had one of his quieter games for the year so far which is an outlier in an otherwise very good 1.5 months of footy for him. He struggled to influence around the confidence but as he continues to find fitness we were pleased that he still put his body on the line and still tried hard all day. We’d expect a good return to the form that we’ve become accustomed to seeing from him pretty soon!

Jarrad Irons (for Eagles v Bloods)
27 disposals, 9 marks, 1 tackle, 3 clearances, 4 inside 50s, 3 rebound 50s

Jarrad finished with 28 possessions playing on a wing and sitting off the contest at stoppages - he was great. He’s getting a lot more of the footy which is something we’ve been trying to work on with him. It’s a really good sign that he’s starting to find more football. He’s very skilful and smart with the ball when he finds it and this is a positive step towards him playing League football.

Foxtel Cup

Brendon Ah Chee (for Port Adelaide v Morningside)
20 disposals, 2 marks, 1 hit out, 4 clearances, 6 tackles, 3 inside 50s, 1 goal

We were pretty happy with his involvements on debut for the Magpies’ main team he played mainly on-ball and some up forward. He had 20 possessions and kicked a goal and despite a couple of turnovers we were pretty happy with the fact he was involved, had a number of first possessions at stoppage and looked like the level wasn’t beyond him. An encouraging start for him and hopefully he can slide into the League side in the season proper soon.

Steven Salopek (for Port Adelaide v Morningside)
23 disposals, 5 marks, 1 hit out, 2 clearances, 3 inside 50s

Sal’s was a good story, he played his first game for the Maggies and the supporters were obviously really happy to have him there. He was easily he Magpies’ best player with 23 possessions. He used the ball really well playing wing and on ball. He was really positive after the game and is looking forward to playing in the SANFL for the Maggies this week.
