AFL DEBUT
He was drafted at #2 by Melbourne in 2010, behind Tom Scully, and ahead of Dustin Martin (#3). He made his AFL debut aged 18 years 206 days in Round 1, 2010 against Hawthorn at the MCG, losing by 56 points. He was the youngest member of the side and had an equal team-high 23 possessions. Only four players from his first Melbourne team are still playing in the AFL – Lyndon Dunn (now at Collingwood), James Frawley (now at Hawthorn), Tom Scully (now at GWS) and Nathan Jones (now Melbourne captain).
RISING STAR
He was nominated for the 2010 AFL Rising Star Award after his fifth game in Round 5 that year after he’d had 24 possessions and kicked two goals in a 50-point win. Born on 2 September 1991, he played 59 AFL games before his 21st birthday. Only one Port player in AFL history has played more at the same age – Ollie Wines (62). Chad Wingard also played 59.
YOUNGEST AFL CAPTAIN
Appointed co-captain of Melbourne with Jack Grimes in 2012, he was the youngest captain in AFL history at 20 years 211 days when he led the Demons for the first time in his 38th game against Brisbane at the MCG in Round 1 that year. He was the second youngest player in the Melbourne team that day, ahead of only 18-year-old debutant Josh Tynan.
CAREER-BEST
His career-best possession count of 29 came in his 22nd game and the Gold Coast Suns’ very first AFL game at the Gabba in Round 2 2011, when Melbourne won by 90 points. His career-best goal tally of three goals came in his 28th game against Richmond at the MCG in Round 14 2011, when Melbourne won by 27 points. He polled his only Brownlow Medal vote in his 25th game against Essendon at the MCG in Round 11, 2011 when Melbourne won by 33 points.
