THE Port Club is teaming up with Foodbank again in 2020 to help those less fortunate this Christmas with a Reverse Advent Calendar initiative now in place.
As many count down to Christmas and receive gifts from loved ones, the Port Club is asking for donations of non-perishable food until Sunday 20 December to provide to those who need it most.
The idea of the Reverse Advent Calendar is to collect an item each day in the lead up to Christmas to donate, but equally any donation will be appreciated.
Each month about 135,000 South Australians experience food insecurity and a third of those are children.
The global pandemic has added to the burden, having a profound effect on the food security of many Australians. In 2019, 15% of Australians experiencing food insecurity sought food relief at least once per week. In 2020, that number has doubled to 31%.
Charities have reported an average 47% increase in demand for food relief and while food insecurity can hit anyone, significant numbers of casual employees and international students in particular are now seeking help.
Foodbank works with 586 agencies and 490 schools across South Australia to help provide more than 5 million meals per year to those who need them, but it relies on the support of a large network of volunteers and the community.
The Port Adelaide Football Club is encouraging members and supporters to take a moment to think about others in need.
It has set up a black ‘cage’ in the sports bar area of The Port Club where donations of non-perishable food can be placed.
The Port Club is currently open daily from 8.30am, however the bistro is closed due to renovation preparations.
The Sports Bar / Lounge area is operating with barista made coffee and beverages available as well as Balfours products available to purchase.
The Port Store is also open Monday – Friday from 10am – 4pm and Saturday 10am – 3pm.
The Port Adelaide Football Club appreciates the patience and understanding of all members, supporters and patrons during the redevelopment.
