PORT Adelaide has formally ratified its leadership group following a player vote earlier this month, adding two members to the initial group announced in November.

Steven Salopek and Jacob Surjan have been added to the group, which now features seven players aged 25 or under.

The group is comprised of captain Domenic Cassisi, vice-captain Dean Brogan, Travis Boak, Alipate Carlile, Troy Chaplin, Salopek, Jay Schulz, Surjan and Jackson Trengove.

Port Adelaide CEO Mark Haysman said the group represented an excellent base for our leadership group for the years ahead.

“The 2011 leadership group is a great mix of personalities that will complement each other well,” Haysman said.

“It’s a good blend of youth and experience and we’re confident the younger members of the group can learn a lot from the more experienced leaders like Dom and Dean.

“The direction of this group is very much in line with the direction of the club, with a heavy focus around youth and accelerating their development wherever possible. We believe we’ve got some great emerging young leaders who will be important leaders for the club for many years to come.”

Senior coach Matt Primus echoed these thoughts, making special mention of the young leaders in the group.

“It’s a real credit to the likes of Boak, Carlile and Trengove to be elected by their peers as a leader,” Primus said.

“These guys are appointed on merit and we’re really looking forward to helping them develop and grow as leaders. We’ve got a fantastic captain in Dom and he’ll work closely with the group to impart the knowledge he’s gained over the past few years.”

The leadership announcement comes on the back of the news the club has reached 30,000 members in its push towards the target of 35,000 members for 2011.
