PORT ADELAIDE has played out an entertaining but one-sided internal trial game at Alberton Oval as preparations for season 2021 continue.

A team wearing black led by skipper Tom Jonas, and with a midfield featuring Travis Boak, Tom Rockliff, Connor Rozee and Xavier Duursma proved way too strong for a white team, which started with Ollie Wines and Willem Drew through the middle and Hamish Hartlett down back.

The black team finished 22.10 (142) to 4.3 (27) winners with Connor Rozee starring with six goals and Mitch Georgiades and Charlie Dixon each grabbing three.

The white side found it hard to score after half time as the teams were switched around.

The black side settled the better with Georgiades taking a strong mark down low on the lead against Jarrod Lienert within 30 seconds. He sprayed his shot but teammate Steven Motlop didn’t miss when he got on the end of a kick inside 50 from new recruit Aliir Aliir.

The former Swan marked on the wing over Todd Marshall and won a 50-metre penalty under the new rules regarding the man on the mark.

Aliir bombed it inside 50 and Motlop was the beneficiary, pouncing on the ball off hands and bending the ball through.

Pete Ladhams had the second for the black side with a ball over the back.

Charlie Dixon tried to spark the white team when he chased down draftee Lachie Jones in the centre square to win the ball back, but when Connor Rozee leaped over SANFL-contracted Tom Corcoran inside 50 and converted from 30 metres out, the black side was 19 points up.

Todd Marshall took matters into his own hands with two marks inside 50 for the white team in the space of two minutes, finishing one from directly in front to get the white side going.

Ollie Wines marked and goaled soon after and the white side went in a goal behind at the first change.

Port supporters were treated to a glimpse of what could be to come with new recruits Aliir, Orazio Fantasia and Jonas involved in a passage of play with Aliir switching the play to Fantasia, who got the ball up the line to Jones to clear it out of the backline for the white team.

The black team kicked off the second term as it did the first, booting five goals to two including five of the first six.

Perhaps the pick of them was a chain straight out of the centre square that ended with a classy snap by Fantasia for his first major of the morning.

It was a couple of young forwards getting the business done with Mitch Georgiades and Ollie Lord looking strong for the black side. Lord’s strong mark inside the first minute in a pack saw him boot his first goal from 25 metres out and Georgiades finally got his first goal after 19 minutes after a couple of behinds.

SANFL-contracted Ben Edwards was a shining light for the white team, causing problems for Jonas, including a diving mark on the lead that he finished off with a goal from the resulting set shot.

Trent Burgoyne goaled after marking 40 metres out for the white side, but the black side was well in command at the major change, leading by 24 points.

The game continued at high intensity, with no player taking a backwards step with players very aware of the selection squeeze with pre-season games kicking off in a fortnight. A highlight was a contest between Dixon and Sam Powell-Pepper, and Hamish Hartlett spilt blood after a head knock.

There were a few changes after half time including Scott Lycett and Tom Rockliff switching to the white side and Charlie Dixon switching to the black and it only led to more pain for the white team, which went scoreless for the entire third quarter.

Connor Rozee was involved in plenty, setting up two goals for Mitch Georgiades and nabbing another for himself.

Fantasia got involved too and grabbed a second major on the run from 50 metres out.

A nice bit of play involving Dixon and Robbie Gray ended with a brilliant snapped goal by Boak and Marshall, now playing for the black team grabbed another goal to make it seven goals to none for the term.

More changes followed for the last term with Lycett rejoining the black team with Wines and Georgiades, Lord and Marshall crossing over to the white.

It mattered little as Rozee got his fourth into an open goal and Dixon added his second after Ladhams roved deep inside 50, completed a neat turn and handed it off to the big man running int o the goal square.

Dixon was suddenly in command of the forward 50 for the black team, and he pushed off two defenders to mark and add a third major, then handed one over the top to Rozee for his fifth of the game as the margin blew out to nearly 100 points with ten minutes remaining.

Sam Powell-Pepper was working hard through the middle for the white side and Hartlett, wearing the number 44 returned to try and stem the flow but the experience of the black team was proving too much.

When Xavier Duursma goaled from a 50-metre set-shot in front of the bowling green, the game was all but done, but nobody told Karl Amon who used the wind to replicate the feat from nearly the same position.

Rozee finished the game with yet another goal from the goal square after another pass from Dixon – the final margin a whopping 115 points.
