Rnd 15 SANFL wrap-up
Daniel Boyle has won this week's Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week award.
Despite strong support from fellow Power listed players, Matt Westhoff and Jonathon Giles, Boyle and the Bulldogs couldn’t get over the line against the Magpies in the reserves. The trio will be pushing for league selection after their impressive performances.
The award is judged by Power development coaches, Daniel Healy and Darren Trevena, and is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each Monday afternoon.
Mitch Farmer was another standout in a good round for Power player in the SANFL…
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Daniel Boyle (for Central reserves v Port reserves at Elizabeth) – His best game for the year. Not only did he get more than 20 touches, but he also kept his opponent very quiet, something we’ve been working with him on. He provided great run and carried the ball well as he always does, and he also improved the defensive side of his game.
Matt Westhoff (for Central reserves v Port reserves at Elizabeth) – He was solid without being outstanding. He got to a lot of marking contests, mainly because he presents so well and virtually forces his team mates to kick him the ball. He had 10 possessions, 5 marks and kicked 3 goals – including two from outside 50. With Daniel Schell out of the league side, he’s a chance to get promoted for his second league game for the year.
Jonathon Giles (for Central reserves v Port reserves at Elizabeth) – His best game in a number of weeks. He had 14 possessions 10 marks, 3 goals, 4 tackles, 5 chases and 41 hit outs. He had 4 contested marks in the third quarter alone, which is very promising.
Matt Lobbe (for Port reserves v Central reserves at Elizabeth) – Matty had to ruck against Gilesy and another big bodied ruckman and although it was a tough job, he tried hard and competed well. He had 13 possessions, 5 marks and 8 hit outs. He’s learning and improving.
Ryan Williams (for Central v Port at Elizabeth) – He started well, getting plenty of the ball but unfortunately just missed a few targets, which is quite unlike him. In the past he may have gone into his shell, but he stuck to his guns on Saturday and fought back well. He continued to hunt the ball and started to use the ball really well. He ended up with 19 kicks and 2 handballs. His stocks continue to rise.
Michael Wilson (for Port v Central at Elizabeth) – Played at half back and was good again without being brilliant. He ran and linked up well, finishing with 19 possessions and 9 marks. He continues to push for selection again.
Brendon Lade (for South v Sturt at Murray Bridge) – Played in the ruck for the first half and then up forward in the second half. In the ruck he was outstanding with 22 hit outs from 31 ruck contests. He took 9 marks – 4 of which were contested – and had 16 possessions to go with a goal. He was definitely a solid contributor for South.
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt v South at Murray Bridge) – Mitch continued his great form with 25 touches from a back pocket, running and carrying the ball well. He also had 6 spoils, keeping his man under control. He’ll keep putting pressure on the Power side with performances like that.
Adam Cockshell (for Norwood v North at Norwood) – Played at full forward and in the ruck. Probably not as good as he has been in previous weeks but still got to plenty of contests. Not as much impact, but he’s still improving. He had 13 possessions, 6 marks and 1.1. Went into the ruck as well and had 14 hit outs.
Ryan Willits (for West v Glenelg at Richmond) – West played a strategy which saw them get a lot of numbers behind the ball, leaving Ryan up forward often contesting against three or four opposition defenders. This made it pretty tough for him all day. He fought hard and kicked 1.1 to go with 6 possessions and 2 marks.
Paul Stewart (for South reserves v Sturt reserves at Murray Bridge) – Stewie played for South reserves under the guest player ruling. We really wanted to just get some game time into him having been out for a few weeks. It certainly served that purpose as he finished with 25 possessions and had 13 handball receives. He’ll be better for the run.
Marlon Motlop (for North reserves v Norwood reserves at Norwood) – In the first quarter he was electrifying with 12 possessions and 2 goals. After that, he wasn’t as influential but that is something we’re still working on with him and he’ll get better each week. Marlon had 14 kicks, 6 marks, 10 handballs and 2 goals.
