Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus’s position will be assessed at the end of 2012 in keeping with a review clause in his three-year contract.

Power CEO Keith Thomas said on Thursday that it was standard procedure to review contracts and that he didn't think the coach was in any danger of losing his job.

"The way I would interpret the contract would be that he's got a three-year contract with an opportunity to review it at the end of this year, which we would do as a normal practice anyway," Thomas said.

"It's a contract that ends at the end of 2013 with a mechanism inside it which says 'at the end of 2012 we'll sit down and review'.

"The reality is that I meet with Matthew every week and that discussion (contract review) will be an extension of that. There's nothing unusual about it at all."

Port Adelaide and former coach Mark Williams parted ways under a confidential settlement in 2009, but Thomas refused to discuss the possibility of something similar happening with Primus.

"I don't want to get into contract details," Thomas said.

"Matthew is approaching the rebuild of his coaching group with great passion; I think it's working well, we look forward to the season."

He said the introduction of new coaches in Tyson Edwards, Josh Carr, Shaun Rehn and Brad Gotch had changed the coaching landscape at Alberton after a disastrous 2011 season.

"A big part of the issue last year was the lack of resources around him (Primus)," Thomas said.

"I'm viewing the whole coaching discussion more as the ability of the collective group to work well together with Matthew to perform better.

"Right now I've been really impressed with how that's developing and we hope that will continue to develop as the year goes through."

Thomas said it would be unlikely the club would exercise its right to deny Primus a third year should the Power's performance in 2012 mirror that of 2011, when the team finished second last.

"I'm not sure I'd go that far, but none of us would be very happy if that was the outcome of this year," he said.
