For every goal Port Adelaide kicks against Melbourne, Foodland will donate $500 to Foodbank SA. AGL will also donate $100 for every tackle for both teams.

IF YOU are attending Port Adelaide’s blockbuster Thursday night clash with Melbourne, you are being encouraged to bring food or funds to Adelaide Oval to help end hunger this winter.

The idea is part of a food drive for families in need by Port Adelaide’s charity partner Foodbank SA, with volunteers to be on hand at the gates to accept donations of non-perishable foods or financial donations with tap and pay available.

Foodbank SA has proudly partnered with the Port Adelaide Football Club as a charity partner for more than ten years, with more than 250,000 meals put on the tables of those most in need as a direct result of the generosity of club members.

More than 135,000 South Australians go hungry every month with one third of those being children. The need is heightened during the cold of winter.

Port Adelaide CEO Matthew Richardson encouraged all Port Adelaide people to get behind the cause.

“The relationship with Foodbank is a really important one for Port Adelaide,” he said after spending the morning helping with out with a pre-school holiday pop up for those in need at Foodbank’s Edwardstown headquarters.

“Foodbank were with Port Adelaide when we needed them most, back in 2012 and 2013 and here we are eight or nine years later with a fantastic partnership where we are proud to be helping people when they are in their greatest need.

“Foodbank does an amazing job right across the state and right across the country so we ask all our members and supporters who come to the game, there’ll be Foodbank bins at the gates right around Adelaide Oval – scour the kitchen, raid the pantry and anything you can spare, drop in one of those Foodbank bins. It’ll go towards families in need.”

The most sought-after foods for donation on Thursday night include canned vegetables and fruit, cereals, tinned meals, long-life milk, pasta sauce, spreads, rice and tuna.

Fellow Port Adelaide partners Foodland and AGL have also come on board to support the cause.

As part of Foodland Goals to End Hunger, the South Australian supermarket chain will donate $500 to Foodbank for each goal scored by Port Adelaide, which equates to 1,000 meals per goal.

AGL will also support Foodbank with its AGL Tackling Hunger with the energy and telecommunications provider to donate $100 per tackle recorded during the match – that’s by both teams!

Foodbank CEO Greg Pattinson thanked the club’s members and corporate partners for backing the End Hunger campaign.

“All the financial donations we receive enable us to buy food,” he said. “For example, $10 will enable us to buy the equivalent of 20 meals, so it does have enormous impact.

“Our partnership with Port Adelaide has been fantastic. We treasure that relationship. We love the fact that Port Adelaide members and supporters know about Foodbank and they get on board.

“Some of the stuff we do, we can only do because of the support of the Port Adelaide community.”

Foodbank’s mobile donation truck will be parked on the Eastern Plaza but staff and collection bins will be at each of Adelaide Oval’s gates.

For those unable to get to the game, a QR code is made available that you can scan to make a donation online.
