PORT ADELAIDE will not wear its iconic black-and-white Prison Bars guernsey in this Saturday night’s Showdown 50.
The Club’s request to the AFL to wear its heritage Prison Bars guernsey in both Showdowns in 2021 was rejected in April and this position has not changed ahead of the club’s away Showdown this weekend.
Port Adelaide chief executive Matthew Richardson said this issue will not just go away and the club would continue to have discussions with the AFL and whoever else it needed to in order to find a solution.
“The request has not changed to wear our heritage black-and-white Prison Bars guernsey in all Showdowns moving forward and we will continue our discussions with the AFL,” Mr Richardson said.
“We’ve seen other AFL Clubs celebrate their guernsey heritage in recent weeks, which has been widely applauded as adding to the game and we look forward to Port Adelaide having the same opportunities in the future to celebrate our 151 year history and heritage.
“We believe strongly that recognising and celebrating heritage builds a stronger connection with fans across all generations and that can only be positive for clubs and the game generally.
“We also believe our request is fair and reasonable and in line with the AFL’s own purpose to respect heritage.”
