Managing only a handful of games in four injury-interrupted years with the Brisbane Lions, Sam Skinner joined the South Adelaide Panthers in the SANFL. Playing 21 games on the season he was able to show his athleticism and competitiveness, impressing Port Adelaide recruiting team and signing on with the club as a free agent.
Skinner made his debut for Port Adelaide in Round 2 against Hawthorn, collecting ten disposals in his first appearance for Port Adelaide. He played the following week against Adelaide, however struggled to get back into the side upon the return of Port Adelaide's key defenders Aliir Aliir and Tom Clurey from injury.

The Port Adelaide Football Club acknowledges the land on which we train and play, are based on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people. We respect their spiritual relationship with their country. We also acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as the traditional custodians of Australia and that their cultural and heritage beliefs are still as important to the living people today.
