WITH Port Adelaide’s game against South Adelaide in the balance, Jake Weidemann made his presence felt.
The key forward kicked three clutch goals in the final term to deliver the Magpies a stirring victory at Alberton Oval.
Weidemann was given a defensive role to limit the impact of the dangerous Joe Haines on Saturday.
Haines entered the contest averaging 25 disposals per game in 2021 and had 40 last week against North playing off half back but had just 18 under Weidemann’s watch.
The 190cm forward says it was nice to play his role and hit the scoreboard as well after a few lean weeks.
“It's good, I've been struggling with a bit of form lately,” Weidemann told portadelaidefc.com.au.
“I went to the tagging role [on Joe Haines] and it just all went well for us in the last quarter, and just landed in my lap a few times.
“I think when we kicked a couple of goals in the third quarter, everyone's confidence went up a little bit.
“Haines had dropped off me a few times and I managed to get it as he was too far away from me.”
Weidemann has kicked 13 goals for the season and constantly provided a target in a young and inexperienced Port Adelaide forward line. His game against the Panthers was his best for the year.
Looking back on his shift across Port Road from Woodville-West Torrens, the 21-year-old has loved every moment at Alberton.
“It's been incredible,” he said.
“It's been the best thing I've ever done for my footy and my confidence.
“I can't believe the AFL boys just treat you like one of them, it's incredible.
“They're all very welcoming and the whole club – the coaches, staff, everything. It’s been great.”
Weidemann and Port Adelaide will play Glenelg at Alberton in the final round of the home and away season following a week off for the SANFL’s split round.
