Academy outclassed by Bays
Port Adelaide's Academy side suffered a 50-point loss to Glenelg at Alberton
In perfect conditions at Alberton Oval, it was Glenelg who took control early, dominating the clearances and running it out of the middle.
Port Adelaide was plagued by poor decision making when in attack and the Bays made them pay on the rebound.
A soccer off the ground from Sam Gordon finally put the Magpies on the board with a major, 18 minutes gone in the first term - the home side's only major of the quarter. ?
The Bays were allowed a lot of breathing space down field, swiftly moving the ball into their attacking 50 , which helped them to a five goal to one first term and a 26 point lead at the first break.
Port Adelaide put on an improved performance in the second half, with Tom Gray and the side's first-gamer Nathan Krakouer providing the hard run through the middle of the ground, helping the team dominate possession.
But inaccuracy in front of goal hurt the Magpies, and the side could not manage to put any real scoreboard pressure on the Bays nor be rewarded for their efforts, scoring just two goals and 10 points in the third term.
Glenelg dominated possession again in the final term, pressuring the Magpies into ball handling errors.
Despite only outscoring the home side four goals to three in the final term, the damage had been done and Glenelg ran out convinsive winners by 59 points.
Academy coach Jacob Surjan told pafc.com.au after the game he was dissapointed with the loss, but would not allow his chargers to lose confidence heading into next week's match.
"There's still a lot of work to do, but we will just get back on the horse," Surjan said.
"The boys are pretty disappointed and that's not the way they want to play.
"But we will learn from it, get on with it and review it pretty hard hard tomorrow.
He said he was pleased with the work rate, but acknowledge the team still had a lot of work ahead of them to match it with the best in the competition.
"They are a really young group, but we aren't making any excuses for them.
"They never game up and really had a crack until the end of the game.
"But there's still some areas of our ball movement and defensive structures that we really need to work on and we have a week and a bit to do that before next week."
Port Adelaide's Academy side's round three match will be against Woodville West Torrens at Woodville Oval, on Monday, April 21, at 11.25am.
