AFL BOSS Andrew Demetriou has promised Port Adelaide fans the club will not be relocating to Tasmania.
On Monday, a report on Adelaide’s Radio 5AA linked the Power to an upcoming Senate Inquiry to discuss Tasmania's right to host an AFL club ahead of the Gold Coast and western Sydney.
The report suggested the Inquiry would hear three proposals: one to create a new team within the state, one to relocate a Victorian team to Tasmania and another to relocate Port Adelaide.
Power CEO Mark Haysman described the idea of his club moving 11 of its home games to the Apple Isle as ‘ludicrous’ and AFL chief executive Demetriou agreed.
“I can promise you that Port Adelaide is not going to Tasmania. Not a word has passed anyone’s lips about Port Adelaide playing (home games) anywhere other than in Adelaide,” Demetriou told Radio 5AA on Tuesday night.
“Port Adelaide is one of the great football clubs to ever exist in this country.
"They’ve won more (SANFL) premierships than anyone we know and they have a great history and tradition, so for anyone to be talking about Port Adelaide going to Tasmania - with respect to Tasmania - is an insult to their tradition and supporters.
“We’ve got great faith in the club’s new administration and they are a vital part of our competition. They have a great coach and I think they are going to be a very, very good team this year.”
Demetriou said the AFL would co-operate with the Senate Inquiry, but maintained the Federal Government had no jurisdiction over the 16th license, which is owned by the SANFL and leased by the Power.
“We’ve been asked to attend the inquiry and there will be someone from the AFL go along and talk about it but we’re not quite sure where this has come from,” he said.
“There is a global financial crisis on and a lot of other things going on in the world. I’m not quite sure why the Senate wants to use its precious time to discuss a decision that’s been taken by the AFL Commission.”
The inquiry will sit in Melbourne on March 27 and in Launceston on April 1.
