Burgoyne was one of Port Adelaide’s best players in the game and, along with fellow Aboriginal star Gavin Wanganeen, had his guernsey taken from his bag in the aftermath of the win.
“I think it happened when we went back onto the MCG to sing the song with the cup,” Burgoyne explained to portadelaidefc.com.au.
“The next day or so, Gavin and myself checked our footy bags and we realised that someone had taken our guernseys.”
Port Adelaide recently began a campaign to retrieve Gavin Wanganeen’s guernsey and only recently confirmed Burgoyne had one of his taken.
But while Burgoyne elected to wear two jumpers during the game and retains possession of one, Wanganeen’s sole guernsey was taken from the rooms.
Burgoyne says it would be difficult for anyone to boast of having possession of either jumper.
“It’s not like someone can put it on the wall without people knowing they’re Peter Burgyone or Gavin Wanganeen’s guernsey – they can’t go around showing it off without people knowing who they really belong to,” Burgoyne said.
“It was the club’s first [AFL] premiership and a special guernsey for us to have.”
Burgoyne wants his second premiership guernsey back and has committed to donating it to a worthy cause if it’s returned.
“I did wear two guernseys on the day and it would mean a lot to get this one back. I'd like to donate it to a charity,” he said.
“I think it’s just the right thing to do.”
Port Adelaide received information from an anonymous caller on the whereabouts of Wanganeen's jumper, but it has proven insufficient to follow up further.
“It would be great to have that person call the club back and provide a bit more information and for anyone else who knows anything to get in contact too,” said Burgoyne.
The Power’s 2004 premiership team will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of its historic achievement this year. Those with information are encouraged to contact the club on 08 8447 4044 and can do so anonymously.
