PORT ADELAIDE AFL games record holder Kane Cornes will play on into his fourteenth season with the club next year after signing a one-year contract extension.

The four-time club best and fairest winner and reigning John Cahill Medallist has played in all but one game this season, after missing the weekend’s win against St Kilda due to suspension.

Cornes broke Warren Tredrea’s Port Adelaide AFL games record of 255 earlier this season in the Round 12 clash against the GWS Giants.

His game tally now sits at 260 after making his debut against Hawthorn at the MCG in Round 10, 2001.

Port Adelaide senior coach Ken Hinkley says the club is delighted to have Cornes continue for at least another year.

“Kane’s experience and professionalism is so vital around our young group,” Hinkley said.

“We don’t have many older players in our group and Kane has been fortunate to have played through a very successful period at this club.

“That is really important when you’re trying to bring that successful culture back into a group and Kane plays a vital role in being able to impart that experience and knowledge onto the younger players.”

Hinkley says Cornes still has a significant role to play on-field for the remainder of this season and in 2014.

“Kane has had an outstanding season so far and has been one of the real leaders that have helped this club re-establish itself as a competitive team in the AFL,” Hinkley said.

“I would like to think that he can still add to the team in terms of the defensive role that he has always been renowned for as well as his offensive ball movement. All things being equal we believe he can maintain a similar role for us next season.”

Cornes, 30, says he is excited to extend his career for at least another season and thanks Hinkley for the faith he has shown in him.

“The trust that Kenny has shown in me is great and I feel a real sense of responsibility to play a mentoring type of role to help the younger players not only on game day, but also off the field in any way I can,” Cornes said.

Kane Cornes player profile

The 2004 premiership player and two-time All-Australian is enthused by what the future holds at Alberton and is delighted to remain a one-club player.

“I’ve been here at the club through the really good times when we were a powerhouse and also during times when we’ve struggled a bit so to still be here in a period where we seem to be building towards something special is very exciting for me,” Cornes said.

“It’s such a great time to be at the club. We’re in such a really good place at the moment and it’s just a credit to everyone who has been able to transform it so quickly.

“And it’s amazing to be a one-club player here at Port Adelaide. It’s something that I always wanted since I stepped foot in this place so to be able to do that after fourteen seasons will be a huge thrill.

“I owe a lot to this club for what they’ve done for me and my family over many years.”
