Port Adelaide has ruled key defender Jackson Trengove out of this weekend’s season opener against St Kilda at AAMI Stadium.

Trengove suffered a finger injury in the opening quarter of the NAB Challenge game against Melbourne at AAMI Stadium on March 16. He was subbed out of the game before the club sought specialist medical assessment which revealed a small fracture.

Port Adelaide General Manager- Football Peter Rohde says the club has waited to see if the injury would settle down but have decided to err on the side of caution.

“We’ve made the decision to rule Jackson out of this week’s game,” Rohde said.

“The medical advice is that if he plays this week and displaces the fracture he may require surgery and need an extensive break from playing.

“Our understanding is that if he has this weekend off he is much less likely to re-injure the finger when playing next week and will therefore just miss the one game.

“We will reassess his injury next week in anticipation that he will be available for Round 2.
