In the third of three line review segments, defence coach Matthew Nicks and development coach Stuart Cochrane review the performances of Port Adelaide’s defenders at the halfway point of the season...

3. Campbell Heath INJ
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 6
Had LARS surgery on his knee, but we’re hoping he can get back into it soon enough and there’s a chance he might return by the end of the year. We’ll also use him on matchday with the Magpies to help with the back six. - Stuart Cochrane

5. Matthew Broadbent
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 19.7 disposals (22.36% contested), 74.7% disp efficiency, 5.1 marks, 1.2 clearances, 1.7 tackles, 0.1 goals

Matty gives us huge metres gained, he’s very good with the football and penetrating with his foot skills. I think opposition try to look after him, it’s amazing how some defenders can get attention from opposition. When he’s off the chain he’s very good, clean with the football and takes our kick ins. He’s been very good at getting jobs done this year. We’re very happy with his work so far this year. - Matthew Nicks

12. Jackson Trengove
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 15.3 disposals (48.91% contested), 74.5% disp efficiency, 3.8 marks, 1.2 clearance, 2.2 tackles, 0.1 goals

I’m a little bit worried about losing him because we’ve recently discovered he can play back, ruck and now up forward! A bit like a reverse-Justin Westhoff. He’s got such a strong physique that is matured, is strong in terms of his defensive craft and ability to defend. I’d hate to be a forward playing against him, because he’s hard to shake. He’s also been a huge support for Lobbe and performs that pinch-hitting role too. He doesn’t get noticed much outside the club, it’s probably because he just gets the job done without fanfare. - Matthew Nicks

13. Cam O’Shea
Games Power: 2, Magpies: 8
AFL averages: 15 disposals (23.33% contested), 90% disp efficiency, 4 marks, 0 clearances, 3.5 tackles, 0 goals

Has come on in the last few weeks with better offence and defence. He provides really good rebound for the Maggies down back and works really hard into defence when we need him. His work rate is as good as it gets and while he does have a few areas that he’s working on, we feel he’s getting close to hitting his best SANFL form and into a position to be considered for AFL selection again. - Stuart Cochrane

15. Lewis Stevenson
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 2
After a long-term injury Lewy is now back in form and has played two games for the Magpies. He’s starting to get fitness back and you can see him slot into our side in the last couple of weeks and show some of the things we know he’s capable of. We expect him to take his performances up to another level. He’s showing good signs. - Stuart Cochrane

17. Tom Clurey
Games Power: 1, Magpies: 10
AFL averages: 7 disposals (28.57% contested), 85.7% disp efficiency, 2 marks, 0 clearances, 1 tackles, 0 goals

Has been solid in defence and hasn’t had many goals kicked against him. He gets the main opposition forward nearly every week and has been solid in the position in the contest. He competes well and gives us a lot of rebound – he’s a real weapon with his ball use down back. - Stuart Cochrane

24. Jarman Impey
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 10.8 disposals (35.38% contested), 65.4% disp efficiency, 2.8 marks, 0.4 clearance, 2.2 tackles, 0.2 goals

He’s a small, speedy shutdown defender and Tommy Logan has been outstanding in the SANFL side and would normally walk into any AFL team, but to Jarman’s credit he’s probably playing ahead of his experience and works really hard when you consider his age. He’s rarely beaten in their air or on the ground and is an elite runner. He really came into his own against St Kilda recently and was obviously nominated for the Rising Star award against St Kilda. Plenty of work to come, but at this stage we’re happy with how he’s going. - Matthew Nicks

27. Alipate Carlile
Games Power: 10, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 11.7 disposals (29.06% contested), 76.9% disp efficiency, 3.5 marks, 0.1 clearance, 1.7 tackles, 0 goals

Bobby’s learned what it takes to be a top-level footballer and key position defender. He’s had some big jobs this year and, when he hasn’t, he’s been a very offensive player for us. He’s physically and mentally in a very good spot and is essentially the gel that makes sure everyone’s in the right position for us – his on-field leadership is something that’s very good. - Matthew Nicks

29. Jasper Pittard
Games Power: 12, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 17 disposals (21.08% contested), 73.5% disp efficiency, 5.1 marks, 0.5 clearance, 1.9 tackles, 0.2 goals

I can’t speak more highly of the improvement he’s made in terms of his defensive game. He’s stepped up to the plate for us this year and has been very good offensively for us. I think when you look at his performance against St Kilda he would have come close to playing his best game for the year. We’ve got so much more in Jasper – he hasn’t really unleashed his potential yet, this year – and if it all comes together on the day, he’ll be a very exciting player to watch. His focus is on bringing all his facets together so he can be another really damaging running back for us. - Matthew Nicks

30. Sam Colquhoun INJ
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 0 4
Sammy has had surgery and is now in the early stages of his rehab. We’ll be working on some stationery skills work and slowly bringing him back into full training over the next year. He’s a quality player and was playing some good footy before the injury, we just need to make sure we get him right over the course of the year. - Stuart Cochrane

33. Darcy Byrne-Jones
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 9
Darcy has really impressed us as a player. He had some big jobs through the pre-season where we asked him to play on some big players like Robbie Gray, Angus Monfries and Jake Neade. He’s adjusted really well since then and has learned a lot from playing on those quality key forwards to the points where he’s found SANFL form as a backman and is starting to rebound and use the ball well. He’s competitive and a good, tough and hard defender. - Stuart Cochrane

36. Jack Hombsch
Games Power: 11, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 14.3 disposals (31.21% contested), 79.6% disp efficiency, 5.6 marks, 0.2 clearance, 2.7 tackles, 0 goals

Probably our most underrated defender outside the club, inside we rate him super-highly. He’ll often get big jobs as our quiet, unassuming, ruthless defender. I’d love to hear what opposition say about him after games in terms of how they evaluate his performance, because he’s a really good, young kid who wants to learn more and more about footy and is working hard to be elite. What he lacks in speed, he makes up in his determination to compete and win. - Matthew Nicks

42. Tom Jonas

Games Power: 9, Magpies: 0
AFL averages: 14.6 disposals (30.77% contested), 84.7% disp efficiency, 4.6 marks, 0.7 clearance, 1.9 tackles, 0 goals

We lost Tommy for a month and we need to make sure he’s 100% come the business end of the season as our big workhorse. He’s versatile in terms of what he gives us and can play a variety of roles. We love what he gives us on and off the field as part of the leadership group. He’s not a flashy player, but he’s reliable – you know what you’ll get – and we do know what we’ll get going forward. - Matthew Nicks

44. Tom Logan
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 10
It’s good to see him get the call to the Power side this week, because he’s been really consistent for the Maggies every week. He probably knows he’s one of those players who needs to make the most of his opportunities with our back six looking really strong, but he’s the sort of bloke who can come into a side and perform at the drop of a hat. At SANFL level his leadership as the elder statesman of our back six is a real benefit to the younger players coming through – he really helps to fasttrack their initiation to the club and the game. - Stuart Cochrane

45. Daniel Flynn
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 6

It’s disappointing for him to have a two-week suspension halfway through the year, but I think he’s been otherwise at a level we would expect for an Irish convert. He’s becoming a cult hero with his running and he’s a rare athlete. He’ll continue to work on a few things this year, but we’re looking forward to seeing him get back into the side and playing some good footy. - Stuart Cochrane

47. Sam Russell
Games Power: 0, Magpies: 2
In the same boat as Stevenson with a pre-season interrupted by injury and then a hamstring just before the start of the season. We like the way he tries to shut down opposition small forwards. He’s been working on all aspects of his game and having played two weeks of senior footy, we’re excited about what he might offer in the second half of the year. - Stuart Cochrane
