Qtr-by-Qtr: Power v Tigers
Port Adelaide and Richmond have played out a dramatic draw at the MCG
Port Adelaide started strongly in the club’s only game at the MCG for the year.
Brad Ebert kicked the first of the game, dribbling it through from a near impossible angle and backed it up just a minute later with another great goal on the snap, but the second was bizarrely called a behind for being touched. Replays showed the Richmond player was some way from touching the ball.
Tuck got the Tigers away goaling on the run from 45m before McGuane kicked the Tigers second after marking in the goal square.
Matt Thomas kicked our second thanks to some nice play through the centre of the ground but the Power continued to burn opportunities in front of goal, with Danyle Pearce the culprit this time, missing from 35m out straight in front.
Riewoldt got loose from Carlile and kicked his first goal - and 60th for the year - to reclaim the lead for the Tigers.
Edwards goaled quickly after the restart and the Tigers went into the first break with a handy lead.
Quarter time
Port Adelaide 2.5 (17)
Richmond 5.1 (31)
Goals: Brad Ebert, Thomas
Disposals: Broadbent 8, Wingard 7, Pearce, Cornes, Thomas 6
Second quarter
The game continued at a high pace with ball moving up and down the ground smoothly from both sides, but neither could put it on the scoreboard in the early stages.
Shaun Grigg hit the post after being legged - which started a mini-melee - and the Power made the Tigers pay at the other end through Broadbent.
The Power’s improved ball-movement continued and Schulz got free to kick his first - and 39th for the season.
Riewoldt dribbled one through at the other end, despite a great chase-down from Hartlett on Nahas in the lead-up and hit the post minutes later - a goal which would have seen him tied for the Coleman Medal.
Brett Ebert missed a sitter from 25m on a set shot, but Schulz showed the way kicking two in a row from set shots - the first from a tight angle in the pocket.
The Power held a narrow lead at half time, one that perhaps should have been a bit bigger given the visitors’ dominance in the second quarter.
Half time
Port Adelaide 6.7 (43)
Richmond 6.6 (42)
Goals: Schulz 3, Broadbent, Brad Ebert, Thomas
Disposals: Cornes 16, Broadbent, Brad Ebert 11, Cassisi, Schulz, Westhoff, Wingard
Third quarter
Some poor marking at a forward stoppage gave Edwards the chance to kick the first goal of the second half, slotting it from a tight angle.
The Power answered straight back as Brett Ebert handballed to cousin Brad who dribbled his second goal before Broadbent kicked another straight from the centre thanks to some great play from Darren Pfeiffer, who broke through a pack.
Kane Cornes missed an opportunity from a set shot from 45m shortly after, but Brad Ebert kicked his third after some great hands from Cassisi in a pack.
McGuane then kicked his second after a 50m penalty against Pfeiffer for entering the restricted zone.
The Power continued to press and dominated the inside 50 count but were still struggling to put it on the scoreboard.
Schulz pulled something special out, running back with the flight to mark over ruckman Ivan Maric in the goal square. He converted for his fourth.
Dustin Martin left the field with a hamstring injury and John McCarthy was subbed off, replaced by David Rodan.
After Post popped up for a goal for the Tigers, Brett Ebert kicked two quick goals to open up an 18-point margin - the biggest of the game.
The Tigers then tightened the screws with Riewoldt popping up for two quick goals of his own to claim the Coleman Medal outright.
Nathan Blee missed an opportunity late in the quarter, putting his shot out on the full from 40m out on a slight angle.
3/4 time
Port Adelaide 12.8 (80)
Richmond 11.8 (74)
Goals: Schulz 4, Brad Ebert 3, Broadbent, Brett Ebert 2, Thomas
Disposals: Cornes 22, Broadbent, Cassisi 16, Brad Ebert 15
Fourth quarter
The fourth quarter continued at a frenetic pace and the first goal was a good example of this.
Hartlett bombed the ball long from a kick out, reaching the centre square and with the ball popping out the back, Danyle Pearce ran inside 50 and goaled on the run.
The Tigers answered back quickly with a trio of quick goals to take the ascendency.
But the Power weren’t done with yet as Chad Wingard popped up for his first of the afternoon to cut the margin back to just one point.
Brad Ebert had an opportunity to give the Power the lead back but miskicked on the run and it was touched through to level the scores.
The Tigers made the Power pay at the other end, with Riewoldt and Grigg goaling to open up a 12-piont lead with six minutes to play.
But again Port Adelaide got up off the canvas with first Rodan and then Young goaling to cut the margin again.
The skipper Dom Cassisi kicked the equalling point and despite another surge from the resulting kick-in, we couldn’t quite get the score.
An incredible game of football with a thrilling finish.
