WHILE Port Adelaide has now finished outside the top eight in three consecutive seasons, ruckman Dean Brogan believes the Power can play finals next year.

Port finished its 2010 campaign with a roller-coaster victory over Richmond at Etihad Stadium on Sunday, which meant it ended up only four points behind eighth-placed Carlton.

But Brogan is adamant there's plenty more improvement to come, regardless of who is appointed the club’s new senior coach.

"In our last four or five weeks, we've really shown we can match it with the best," Brogan said. "It's just the consistency thing, doing it over four quarters, that is the difference between us and the top-four teams.

"Everyone's talking up Melbourne, Richmond and North Melbourne as the next up-and-coming teams and we’re just flying under the radar.

"Yet we finished with 10 wins. Considering the year we had - losing our coach, losing nine in a row - I think it’s a great effort.

"Obviously not playing finals is disappointing, but we’re building something special."

Brogan praised caretaker coach Matthew Primus for lifting the team out of its slump.

The Power had lost eight consecutive matches before Primus took over from Mark Williams.

"Full credit to Matty and the assistant coaches, as they came in at a difficult time," Brogan said. "Tensions were high when we lost our coach, there was a bit going on, and Matty just came with a clean slate.

"He began playing younger guys, and the younger guys were more confident because they knew if they made a mistake they weren’t going to get dropped.

"For us older guys we got a fresh start as well. I think all in all the club made a really good decision.

"Not being detrimental to Chocco or anything, but the club needed a new start and we've really responded."
