PORT Adelaide forward Justin Westhoff admits he’s been guilty of cutting corners with his preparation this year, but says he’s determined to carry his form from Sunday’s showdown into the last five rounds of the season.

Westhoff played his best game of the year against the Crows last weekend, kicking four influential goals to help steer the Power to a 19-point win.

In 2007 Westhoff burst onto the scene kicking 34 goals from 16 games, but he has struggled to recapture that form over the past two years.

His career appeared to be at the crossroads when he was sent back to SANFL club Central District prior to the mid-season break, but he fought his way back into the team in round 14.

Westhoff said he was happy with his performance against the Crows, but gave himself only a ‘C’ when asked to rate his season as whole.

“Am I happy [with my form]? No, I’m not. I haven’t had a great season…'07 was my best season," Westhoff said on Wednesday.

"Playing a good game doesn’t mean much when you’re not playing finals… and it doesn’t mean much if you can’t back it up the week after.

“Playing a few more good games during the year would be nice, but I’m all about looking forward. I’m just looking to build on that next week and take some form into the next month and hopefully then next year.”

Westhoff also earned praise for his defensive efforts against Adelaide, in particular the tackle that brought down Graham Johncock and resulted in a Port Adelaide goal.

Defensive pressure was a feature of Westhoff’s game in '07 and the 23-year-old said it was important he played with that intensity on a more consistent basis.

“I think it [the effort] been there all along, but putting it together for a whole a game is probably something that’s let me down during the year,” Westhoff said.

"It’s about doing extra things at training, talking to other people, talking to other coaches and leaving no stone unturned.

“I’ve probably cut corners a few times this year and didn’t do everything I probably should have.”

Westhoff’s other memorable game this season came against West Coast in round two, when he played as back-up ruck/tall midfielder.

The retirement of club champion Warren Tredrea has left Port Adelaide without a genuine tall forward and Westhoff said he was keen to assume that role.

“With Tredders going it leaves a huge hole in our forward line," Westhoff said.

"We need one or two guys to stand up and fill that void and I’m definitely keen for that role."
