Port Adelaide selected Sachi Syme as its third pick (23 overall) at the NAB AFLW Draft at Marvel Stadium on Wednesday.
The Norwood midfielder plays a tough brand of footy, demonstrating ferocity on the field, good disposal efficiency and the ability to cover ground well.
Syme broke the SANFLW record for most clearances in a match with 12 in round seven this year and was selected for the All-Australian squad following the under-18 national championships.
Syme was the third of seven picks to go to Port Adelaide at the Draft, following Hannah Ewings and Sarah Goodwin, ahead of AFLW season seven.
Port Adelaide List Manager Naomi Maidment said:
Sachi is really tough inside ball winner, who has impacted in the midfield for Norwood this year. In the under-18s, we saw some versatility with her playing both midfield and defence. She is a Port Adelaide Next Generation Academy product originally from Port Lincoln, and during her time at the Academy, she would fly in and fly out for training. She really showed her dedication to becoming the best footballer she can be. Sachi is a year 12 student who will likely be one of the youngest players drafted, given she doesn’t turn 18 until November.
AFL Talent Ambassador Kevin Sheehan said:
Prolific ball winning midfielder with a great balance between winning her own ball and running to receive. A real stoppage star she excelled at clearances and used her endurance to outwork her opponents averaging 21 disposals (9.7 contested), three tackles and three inside 50s to win All-Australian honours.
