TWO of Port Adelaide’s Next Generation Academy participants were among the victorious Under 16 NAB AFL National Championship winning South Australia side at the weekend.
Coached by Julian Farkas, the SA Under 16 team became national champion after beating Victoria Country by 63-points at Thebarton Oval on Saturday in the side’s third and final game.
Among the team were two Port Adelaide NGA products – Benny Barrett from South Adelaide and North Adelaide’s Louie Montgomery.
Montgomery - the son of 2004 premiership defender and current AFL midfield coach Brett Montgomery – booted two goals in the 14.15 (99) to 5.6 (36) victory.
Having beaten Western Australia by 48 points in Game 1, a loss in game two to Victoria Metro damaged South Australia’s chances of winning the national title, before Metro lost to WA.
Metro, WA and South Australia each secured two victories but the Croweaters had superior percentage to earn themselves the trophy.
Central District defender Will McCabe was named South Australia’s MVP for the championship.
Port Adelaide congratulates Barrett and Montgomery and their teammates on their success.
