PORT ADELAIDE has a host of players pushing for selection for Saturday’s massive game against Geelong with a near full-strength list to choose from for the first time in a long while.
With proven AFL performers Trent Dumont, Orazio Fantasia and Lachie Jones to be put to the test later in the week to prove their fitness and exciting youngsters Josh Sinn and Brynn Teakle also likely to come off the injury list, selection pressure is starting to ramp up at Alberton Oval.
Xavier Duursma, Steven Motlop and Jase Burgoyne were unused AFL emergencies for last weekend’s trip to Alice Springs and will also be in the selection mix.
While the club’s SANFL side went down to West Adelaide in a disappointing showing at Richmond Oval on Saturday, there were some stand-out performances.
Two Sams – Mayes and Hayes – each played well with Sam Mayes accumulating 28 disposals to go with a game-high 12 clearances. The next best on the ground was teammate Nick Moore who had five clearances. Mayes also had six tackles and went inside 50 eight times, trying to drag the Magpies over the line.
Sam Hayes had four clearances of his own along with a massive 41 hit-outs. He added four marks and 15 disposals in a dominant ruck performance.
Midfielder/forward Taj Schofield continues to press his claims for an AFL debut after being among the AFL emergencies on multiple occasions already this season. He had 19 disposals against the Bloods and added seven marks, three tackles and two clearances.
In the forward line, Jed McEntee hunted the opposition, laying six tackles and tallying 18 disposals to go with 1.1 on the scoresheet.
Port Adelaide will on Thursday evening name its side to tackle Geelong.
First bounce on Saturday at Adelaide Oval is 4:05pm.
The Magpies will face Central District later that night from 7:40pm at Woodville Oval.
