Port Adelaide will complete its playing list for 2012 at next week’s pre-season and rookie drafts.

The Power's selection from the pre-season pool is expected to come no later than pick  3, but it could come even earlier if either Greater Western Sydney or Gold Coast don't use their options.

Port Adelaide national recruiting manager Geoff Parker said the club wants to add to its stock of experience, with one place left on its senior list.

“We’re looking for a mature age player, 22-to-25 years of age and with AFL experience, and most likely a midfield type of player,” Parker said.

The club has ruled out selecting former Collingwood defender Leon Davis who this week nominated for the pre-season draft.

Port Adelaide general manager of football, Peter Rohde, said the club had explored the opportunity of picking up the 30-year-old, but after considering all factors had decided against this path.

“We’ve had a lot of discussion about Leon as we have worked through all the options,” Rohde said.

“Leon has been a great footballer, but on balance we have decided that he’s not the best fit for the direction we are taking as a football club.”

The Power is looking at a number of possibilities, having interviewed and medically testing another delisted Magpie in John McCarthy.

Others up for consideration include former North Melbourne player Gavin Urquhart who joined Port Adelaide’s train-on list this week, taking part in his first session on Wednesday.

Former Adelaide, Carlton and Norwood player Darren Pfeiffer is another on the train-on list, together with ex North Melbourne midfielder Ed Lower, and Port Adelaide SANFL players Justin Hoskin and Luke Wilson.

Port Adelaide general manager of football, Peter Rohde, said the club invited the players to join in pre-season.

“Just so we can get a look at them up close and understand a bit more about their personalities and what makes them tick.”

Port Adelaide also has up to three selections in the rookie draft after creating room through a number of retirements and delistings at the end of the 2011 season.

Both the pre-season and rookie drafts will be conducted on Tuesday morning, 13 December.

PortAdelaideFC.com.au will have live coverage of the drafts from 9am SA time.
