SENIOR Port Adelaide player Ange Foley spoke to the media following the NAB AFLW side’s first official open training on Saturday.
A couple of hundred passionate fans gathered at Alberton Oval for a glimpse of the group, soaking up the sunshine while the Port women put on a show on the field.
The team took part in a tough match simulation session, with five ‘train-on’ players invited to join training for the first time, allowing them to experience an AFLW environment.
As energetic as they come, Foley was riding high on pre-season adrenaline.
“Super fun is probably the best way to describe (pre-season),” she said.
“I’m feeling really fresh – new team, new teammates, new people to get to know and the coaches have been amazing getting us all together so we're loving it out on the track. It’s awesome.”
The experienced, two-time Premiership player called out three draftees who have particularly impressed her so far.
“Sachi Syme is one of the youngest girls (in the team) and her leadership qualities are awesome,” Foley said.
“Just to come in and have a great voice out there, she’s just getting better and better every week. She’s been impressive both in a leadership capacity and out on the track.
“Hannah Ewings is a good little insert into the team…we took her at number one (in the NAB AFLW Draft). She’s showing some really good signs. (Yasmin) Duursma, she’s awesome to have, with her connection with her brother (Xavier), and I love left footers – they’re unpredictable.”
Foley is pleased to see the group building cohesion on and off the field, but admits she’s sometimes hardest on herself.
“I’m probably my own worst enemy at times,” Foley said.
“We’re just trying to work each other out, I suppose. Game day on Saturdays is awesome because that’s what were here for – to work each other out, know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and how we can gel as a team.
“(We expect to be) super competitive. I’m competitive as a person and as a leader. We’re out there to try and win every single game so we're going to be super competitive. It’s getting better and better every week.”
In round six, Foley will come up against her former team, the Adelaide Crows, in the historic first women’s Showdown. For some, this may feel daunting, but for Foley, it’s an utterly exciting prospect.
“The Showdown build-up, it’s going to be huge,” she said.
“Adelaide Oval, Friday night under lights, it gives me goosebumps just talking about it. It’s going to be fun, it’s going to be a moment in history.
“That’s what Port Adelaide is here to do, to create history and this is just another chapter in our book.”
