Tom Jonas will lead Port Adelaide onto the MCG on Saturday for his 200th AFL game paying tribute to his vice-captain, his senior coach and his mentor in life (more so than football).

Destiny has again allowed Jonas to share a significant moment with Wines - as they did when they were joint captains in 2019 and when they reached the 150-game milestone in the same match in 2020.

Jonas speaks with admiration, passion and pride of all three men who have made him a better AFL player, a better team-mate and a better human today.

"It is a privilege to celebrate a milestone with one of your best mates and team-mates," Jonas said of his 200th game coinciding with Wines' 200th.

"Milestones are one of those rare moments in football when (rather than team) it is about the individual. We don't play football for the individual accolades. To share this moment with Ollie is awesome. Sharing his Brownlow night with 10 of the boys in Perth last year made it an even more memorable occasion.

"To be able to run out (to the MCG against Collingwood on Saturday) alongside Ollie is going to be magnificent."

Wines this week paid tribute to Jonas developing a more emphatic mood to his captaincy. Jonas responds with admiration for how Wines put aside the personal pain of having to stand down as co-captain at the end of 2019 to allow Port Adelaide to retain tradition with one captain.

"That was an enormous step in his growth and maturity in the way he dealt with that," Jonas said of Wines. "It is a testament to the individual he is.

"When you talk about my skillset, well we should talk about Ollie's. People sometimes get confused about Ollie being a high draft pick (thinking he was called at No.7 by Port Adelaide in the 2012 AFL national draft) because he is extremely skilful. Ollie was taken very high by Port Adelaide because he has an incredible competitiveness and work rate - and thirst to be the best player and team-mate he can be. He has shown that his entire career.

"But in the past three or four years, from when he took on the captaincy (in 2019) and since then, Ollie has taken his (approach) to another level. He is one of those people you build clubs around. You build teams around people like Ollie. He will lead this club into the future for a long, long time.

"I don't make the call on the captaincy. But for leadership credentials, Ollie has as good a resume as anyone. We talk about leading by your actions on the field. Ollie does that every single week."

Hinkley is the third senior coach Jonas has known at Port Adelaide, after Matthew Primus and Garry Hocking. He is the coach of his 79 games as captain - and the coach Jonas knows still is making Port Adelaide live up to its own expectations.

"Ken has been enormous in his support of me from the day he arrived (in October 2012)," Jonas said. "His expectations have been particularly high with the entire group. He has, without fail, continued to drive us in that space. There is never a moment, day or week when he does not expect the highest of you. But at the same time he has become a really rounded leader and companion for the boys.

"This year is a testament to what Ken has been like through his whole career. He has had naysayers and doubters the whole way, but Ken carries himself exactly the same way. He does not fall victim to the outside noise. He focuses on the internal, the Port Adelaide, the people around him and who are important to taking this club forward."

Ebert, a premiership captain, left a strong mark on Jonas on how to be more than a footballer.

"Russell, when you walked past him in the corridor ... when you come to the club for the first three years going to school visits (for the Port Adelaide community programs run by Ebert) ... you'd get advice. But you would also take in the lessons on how someone like Russell carried himself, how he approached his day-to-day life. That showed in the way he played his football and as the human he was."

Jonas also has former captain Travis Boak alongside him in the Port Adelaide team - and his first captain, Dom Cassisi, nearby.

"Travis has been a great sounding board since I took over the role (of captain in 2019)," Jonas said.
