Port Adelaide made life difficult for itself thanks to its inaccurate effort in front of goals on Sunday.

Port had nine more scoring shots than the Lions, but finished with a whopping 17 behinds to ensure the match went right down to the wire.

It came despite Port dominating most key aspects of the game - particularly contested and uncontested possessions, tackles and clearances.

Generally a team that convincingly wins the possession-count wins the match, but that also assumes an effective rate of disposal.

Unfortunately that was one area where Port trailed the Lions and proved another contributing factor to the close result at the end of proceedings.

Jay Schulz was undoubtedly one of Port's best players on the day and led the Power on the scoreboard and in the air with nine marks.

He also proved one of the club's most efficient ball users in a match where clean possession was difficult to come by.

There were some other highlights too, with Kane Mitchell winning six clearances and young Sam Colquhoun accruing seven disposals after being substituted on during a high-pressure final quarter.

Andrew Moore and Matthew Broadbent also had high-quality games with 25 and 22 disposals apiece behind key midfielders Travis Boak and Hamish Hartlett.
