AFL Opening Round
First home game
Broadcaster: Seven
The first game of the year is always an exciting one, and will be an opportunity for the Power to set the tone for season 2016. An Easter Sunday clash against the Saints in a family-friendly timeslot of 2.50pm should see plenty flock to Adelaide Oval to see Charlie Dixon take on Jake Carlisle in their new Power and Saints guernseys. While our history against the Saints is strong, having won the past four of five meetings, the Power will need to come out firing to put a stamp on the year ahead.
Showdown XL
Broadcaster: Seven
It’s the most fierce rivalry in South Australian sport, and expect nothing less from Showdown XL. Technically, it’ll be the earliest Showdown ever played with the closest being Round 2, 2014, when the sides faced off in a Saturday twilight game. Interestingly, 2015saw each side take home the prized Showdown trophy in their away games. The Power will be searching to claim back the title and get one up on their cross-town rivals early in the season – but the Crows won’t give it away easily.
Broadcaster: Seven
Round 3 sees the kickoff of Friday night footy at Adelaide Oval – the best kind of footy, at the timeslot Port Adelaide fans love. Incoming Dons coach John Worsfold will have two games under his belt with his men, and they’ll be looking to make an impact early in the season with a clean slate in 2016. While the Power claimed a narrow 13-point win last time the sides met, they’ve never beaten the Dons at Adelaide Oval.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Port Adelaide will travel to the capital city in round four to take on GWS in Canberra. It’ll be the second time the two sides face off at the Giants’ home away from home. Last time they met in the capital, the Power took away a convincing 35-point win in a rainy game, with Jared Polec starring collecting 30 disposals and three goals. Chilly conditions are always expected, so the Power will need to turn up the heat to maintain their slight winning edge over the Giants – they’ve claimed the last three encounters by a combined 44 points.
Anzac Round
Broadcaster: Seven
The Port Adelaide Anzac Round home clash has become a significant event on the AFL calendar each year. It’s a tradition held close to the club’s heart, and the 2016 commemorative match will be no exception. Our first Saturday night home game under lights against a revamped, Dangerfield-studded Geelong midfield on Anzac Round – it’s safe to say this will be a popular game among the true believers, and one to go down in history if we take away the win.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Saturday night at the MCG against Richmond – it doesn’t get much bigger than that. Given the Power’s disappointing performance against the Tigers in Kane Cornes’ 300th and retirement clash, the boys will be looking to balance the ledger. With the prospect of playing September footy the ultimate goal, it’s an important taste of the game on finals turf.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Last year’s season-defining 37-point loss to the Lions at the Gabba was gut-wrenching, and Ken’s message was clear: it will not happen again. The fierce rivalry between the sides will be re-ignited at Adelaide Oval, giving the Power the opportunity to prove they’re back in action in 2016. The Lions have seen us at our worst, and now we need to bring our best.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
It’s our first game at Etihad Stadium for the season – expect hard, fast footy. We took out three of our four Etihad games in 2015, proving we’re able to adjust to conditions Etihad is famous for. But this one will be a mental game for the boys, after reaching a season low when going down to Carlton in Round 12 by a mere four points in a poor performance all-round.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Adelaide Oval will be a hive of excitement in Round 9 as the Eagles make the long trek to SA for the early evening Saturday clash. While we couldn’t overcome them in 2015, we certainly gave them a run for their money, trailling by 10 points. Expect he re-match to be another hotly contested battle on our home turf. With the additions of Jetta, Redden and Giles to the Eagles ranks, expect their side to be fitter and stronger than ever. A tough and important game for us.
Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round
Broadcaster: Foxtel
We’ll travel to the Red Centre for Sir Doug Nicholls Indigenous Round for the third time in 2016, facing off once again against the Demons in Alice Springs. We’ll be looking to maintain a perfect record against the Dees in the NT, haven taken away the past two wins convincingly. All eyes will be on Jimmy Toumpas, if he’s selected to face his old side for the first time since moving to Alberton.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
In our second and final game centre-stage at the MCG for the minor round, Port Adelaide will face a task against Collingwood on and off the field. The Power took away a narrow, three-point win in an emotionally charged clash at Adelaide Oval in 2015, so the Pies will be hunting redemption. If Pendlebury and Cloke are firing they’ll be hard to stop, and with the largest supporter base in the league –their home ground advantage will be stronger than ever.
Queen's Birthday Long Weekend
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Two young, exciting sides meet on a ground suited to high scoring footy. The Power has taken home the four points in the previous two meetings between the sides at Adelaide Oval – by 72 points in 2014 and 38 points in 2015. However, the Dogs dealt the knockout blow to Port Adelaide’s 2015 finals hopes with a 64-point win at Etihad Stadium in Round 19, 2015.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
One of the toughest road trips in footy and the Power’s recent record against Freo in Perth proves that – six losses from the past seven encounters. The one win, however, was a memorable one in 2014, coming in a sudden-death semi-final with Port Adelaide surging from four goals down in a low-scoring game at half time to outrun the Dockers. Last year’s clash in Perth was one of the games of the season, with Freo outlasting their visitors by seven points in the first game of the season.
The trip to Subiaco does come at the perfect time, with the mid-season bye allowing players more time to recover after the game.
Round 14 - BYE
Broadcaster: Seven
Big stage, big game. The third in a stretch of five straight games against 2015 finalists, Port Adelaide will be hoping to avenge last year’s disappointing loss to the Tigers. A game where the stakes couldn’t have been higher for the Power – Kane Cornes’ 300th and final game – the Tigers outworked and outmuscled the hosts from start to finish. Expect fireworks – in the pre-game and on the field!
Broadcaster: Seven
The three-time reigning Premiers come to Adelaide for a Thursday night blockbuster – an occasion which will almost certainly push the crowd beyond 50,000. Port Adelaide’s recent form against the Hawks is as good as any teams in the competition, having won three of the past four encounters – including the double in 2015. With the past four games between the sides decided by four goals or less, expect a loud, passionate crowd riding this game to the wire.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
A vital game against a side that will no doubt be competing for the top-8 at this point of the year – quite possibly the top-4. A venue that hasn’t always been a happy-hunting ground against a team which has at times been a bogey side for the Power. But three wins from four attempts at Docklands in 2015 – including a win over the Roos – gives reason for optimism in this Saturday twilight fixture.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
Last time these sides met at Adelaide Oval it was a fiery encounter with plenty of players eating baked beans for dinner that week after copping hefty melee fines. This young GWS outfit will be hoping to be pushing for a debut finals berth at this point in the season, so it could shape as a season-defining game for both sides.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
The less said about the Power’s most recent trip to the Gabba, the better. In fact, Port Adelaide’s drought in Brisbane stretches back to Round 13, 2007 – when Boaky and Robbie were still teenagers! A perfect weekender for Adelaide-based fans trying to escape the cold with the Saturday night fixture allowing a fly in, fly out without upsetting the boss and missing a day of work.
Broadcaster: Seven
Port Adelaide will be looking to break another drought at the SCG, one that stretches back to Round 2, 2006. If the past two visits to Sydney are anything to go by (10 point loss in 2015 and 4 point loss in 2014), that drought-breaking SCG win isn’t too far away.
Broadcaster: Foxtel
The pointy end of the season sees the Power face the Demons in the first of two consecutive Saturday night clashes at Adelaide Oval. As at the end of 2015, Port Adelaide holds a six-match winning streak against Melbourne, stretching back to the first AFL game played at Adelaide Oval – in Round 24, 2011.
Showdown XLI
Broadcaster: Foxtel
The latest in the season a Showdown has been played since 2004, when the Power defeated the Crows in the final home game of the season on its way to a first AFL Premiership. Port Adelaide fans will come out in force for the final home game of the Premiership season and make sure Adelaide Oval feels anything but home for the Crows.
Broadcaster: TBC
Charlie Dixon’s first clash against his old club comes in the final round, back in the Gold Coast. Port Adelaide will be hoping to maintain its perfect record against the Suns at Metricon in the fifth clash between the sides at the ground. As has been the case for several years, the AFL doesn’t announce the details of the final round until about one month out from the games.
